I don't know nearly enough about the technical side of animation. Physics engine or is it all keyframes?

This animation could be a number of techniques in combination. I'm sure there was some hand sketching at first to block out targets for the animation. There also might be some simple fluid plugins at use as well. My guess is that these are just vector shapes carefully constructed and efficiently animated on top of a sketched animation draft. A lot of that 'slicing through' effect could easily be created by by pulling one vertice through a circle vector. The rippling effect on the water/yellow portion could easily be made by using a standard Ripple effect in AE. The mastery of this comes in when you have to integrate all these techniques seamlessly. I am not absolutely positive on any of this but I'd love to hear from someone that might no more specifically what plugins or techniques are in play here.
