Maybe you are following the wrong outlets.
Joking...don't invade.
Seriously though, I get what you are saying don't get me wrong. But I think going along the idea that the majority of people in the US are classical liberal(socially liberal fiscally conservative) or Libertarian leaning if Johnson got on the debate stage I feel he could do well.
With that being said I'm going to end this with one more quick fact about Johnson. In a poll done last month he received 11% in a 3 way race with Trump and Sanders. Link
So maybe if more people heard his message by say getting on the debate stage he would be a serious condender and could win the election. People are hungry for a outsider which explains the rise of Sanders, and Trump. Johnson is as much a outsider as they are. And @PntBtr put Johnson on the debate stage so his message would resonance more.
Full disclosure I'm a moderator on v/libertarian so I'm kinda well versed in Gary Johnson and what he is doing.

Maybe 1 event like that could boast his popularity, but if I don't have a clue on who he is, and a browse voat, and used to use reddit which really is was different than mainstream media then it is unlikely the average voter would know much about him in the 2 party controlled system.
I could see a lot of cross party voting in trump Clinton election but really he shouldn't have the lead he dose in game without major political rioting and a strong grassroots movement.
Well then from that standpoint if we are talking about the websites for a second I could make the argument that voat tends to be more right wing(not Libertarian) and reddit more left wing/progressive(not libertarian) again not the best outlets for that information.
I feel this conversation could go on for weeks and not get anywhere, so let's agree to disagree and call it an night.
