A petition titled 'Make Australia a Republic' drafted by political activist group 'Independent Australia' has amassed 2 million signatures in the 6 days since it's creation, pressuring the Australian government to allow the choice to be put to a vote.
The petition's main points of focus are as follows
-
Since Australia's British colonisation 200 years ago, millions of people from nations across the globe have become a part of it's population. As a result, the British monarchy no longer represents the average Australian.
-
When our monarchs travel to foreign nations they seek only to promote British trade and interests. An Australian president would allow us to pursue these interests independently and without conflict of interest.
-
Australia’s highest office should be held by a candidate who rose to the position based on merit, not based on birthright.
In a 2009 poll, it was found that only 10% of Australia's population were passionately opposed to leaving the commonwealth, while another 25% claimed they would feel 'sad' about the decision.
Based on these results and the results of similar polls, if the decision were to make it to a referendum it is very likely Australia would choose to secede from the British Commonwealth.
