South Korea's 2017 presidential elections are about to take place. Two major political parties and their leaders have been fighting for the presidency: the conservative incumbent Saenuri and the liberal New Politics Alliance for Democracy (NPAD). The front runners in the race are Moon Jae-in of the NPAD and former UN Secretary-General Ban Ki Moon running for Saenuri.
Moon Jae-in, defeated by Park Geun-hye in the 2012 election, has again campaigned on a primarily liberal platform while promising to bolster national security by increasing military spending in order to advance the power of the South Korean military. The end goal of this strategy is for the Republic of Korea to take total control of its defense networks instead of relying on US support.
Ban Ki Moon has ran on a center-right platform with more focus on diplomacy, which plays towards the former UN leader's strengths as a diplomat and experiences in his former position. While focusing more on diplomacy, recent world events have seen Ban Ki Moon also move towards supporting a strengthening of South Korea's military.
The South Korean people have chosen Moon Jae-in as their next President. Pundits believe that Ban Ki Moon's advanced age of 73 played a part in his defeat. Moon Jae-in will assume office on the 25th of February.
