No, I'm not equivocating. I'm being pretty clear: Evolution isn't about "reasons". Evolution is what consistently works to ensure an organism survives and replicates.

That means that sometimes things work for reasons that aren't as straightforward as you'd think. That's how we ended up going from single celled organisms to something with consciousness and 5-6 senses and millions of cells and symbiosis with millions of other organisms which were previously trying to eat us.

There are genetic diseases which today we consider not to have a "reason" but in the past were mutations which helped populations survive incredibly specific lethal conditions. We can't know for sure why any given trait helped us survive.
