I find it intensely ironic that these women think an entire family should become branded as untouchables because one of them did something horrible.

There's a few reasons. The first is obviously that it sort of creates this classism which seems opposed to the idea of equality. If you're going to say "there will be classes", you can't say "except for me".

The second is that freedom of association is a basic human right. Everyone should have the right to associate with someone without their crimes damning you if you weren't involved in those crimes. If we're demanding basic human rights for ourselves, we need to respect others basic human rights.
