Whenever you see a new modern retelling of brothers Grimm H C Andersen, old nursery rhymes it's a good bet that the original meant Something entirely different to how it's regarded now.
Ring a ring a Rosie is cute right? Yeah it's actually a kids rhyme about the plague.

Also strangely enough in some old Little Red Riding hood tales, the Wolf eats the Grandmother and then let’s Red finish eating her, so cannibalism, then they jump into bed where the Wolf says he will eat Red. The end. NO happy ending, no heroic woodcutter, nope she plum dies.
These things are strange indeed, but they remind us that back then people were way more aware of the evils of life and these stories told to children, reminding them to be weary of strangers and that happy endings don’t always happen, was pretty useful to know.
