I got a phone extension in my room when I was 15, which was before the consumer Internet days. The liberation that brought to me was unbelievable. I no longer had to watch my language and could act like my regular self on the phone. Nowadays texting and other private messaging systems have made most everything private so long as you lock your phone. Kids today won't know the horror of a sibling or parent listening in on a conversation on a different phone extension. Ahh, the good old days.

If you raise them properly you won't have to worry about that as much. Kids need a fair bit of range and trust so they can learn how to live without helicopter parenting. This along with a healthy dose of consequences for actions are what kids and parents lack today. If you were afforded trust by your parents and did bad things nonetheless, the don't deny your kids the same opportunity to learn through living.
