I do what I think is called mindfullness meditation. I've found that intentionally focusing on nothing is self-defeating, so I observe my thoughts from a distance, and let them go as soon as they are recognized so they don't carry me anywhere. The phrase 'You are a mountain, your thoughts are the clouds' helps.
After a period of time, my thoughts become a rapid and ill-defined series of mental images. I think it's the first step to lucid dreaming, but I either get lost or become too aware and 'wake up'
If both your mind and your body are awake, you're awake. If both are asleep, you sleep. If your body is awake, but your mind is asleep, you are in a trance. If your mind is awake and your body is asleep, you are lucid dreaming. That's how it was explained to me, although with slightly different terminology.
Basically, you trick your body into releasing dream-making chemicals while you're still conscious.

Well I guess were perfect for each other then, what's your favorite sci fi?
WILD, wake induced lucid dreaming is very difficult to do right when you try to sleep it works better if you sleep a few hours and wake up in the middle of the night. I would recommend setting a gental alarm for like 3 or 4 and trying it then.
Honestly? Sci-fi isn't really my thing. I love it, but I know too much science to just accept the explanations that are given (or worse, not given). I am totally willing to suspend disbelief for certain things, if the story would just let me. How does the tractor beam work? Because they're aliens. How do shields work? Because it's the future. The warp drive doesn't work because the anti-neutrino radiation is tripolarized? Fuck yourself sideways with a rake.
So Star Wars is my favorite because the only 2 things they explain is Jack and shit. And if we're being honest, Jack took his shit an left halfway into the series.

Meditation is not inherently religious. There are versions such as mindfulness and such that have nothing to do with religion, while you get some wierd third eye chakra stuff as well.

On my bed, shoulders propped, eyes closed. If I get it just right I'll lucid dream.

Is there a specific lucid dreaming technique you use?
Also no specific style of meditation.

I imagine a lake. Sink into the lake. Begin to float, drift, stray, peacefully drowning.
Open my eyes and im in a dream.

Prayer is to meditation what sex is to masturbation.
