TIL Gawker.com doxxed Reddit user Violentacrez

I was reading up on Reddit censorship and came across this article from 2012. I'm not a fan of the subject matter this user posted or modded. But I see no mention of this user tied to any actual illegal content. It was clear to me at the time of that drama that he was being ousted for simply controlling controversial content and the negative exposure that content received from the media (CNN in particular).

To me, the actions from Reddit corp at that time represented a "slippery slope" scenario. And it's pretty clear how that's turning out now.

This is one of the reasons I'm of the opinion reddit died sometime in 2012...

I agree, The community over there has gotten really bad... Which is why I decided to try voat. It seems pretty good so far.

Why shouldn't Voat take them down, too? Violations of people's privacy like that is serious. Taking them down is not a violation of freedom of speech.

Keep in mind that all of these rights of freedom and expression, rights which have become one of the most fundamental differences between free nations and countries like Saudi Arabia where one can be put to death for not believing in and worshiping the state approved deity, are meant to protect unpopular speech and ideas. Popular and, more generally, socially acceptable forms of expression, inherently have no need for protection.

So while I'd agree it's an invasion of privacy, the problem is that it's a slippery slope. Many countries who abide fundamentalist Islam have absolutely absurd laws that are clearly destroy any sort of freedom of expression and in many cases even thought. However, it obviously did not start out this way. It invariably starts far more modestly and well intentioned. Let's take a common example - the burqa. It did not start out as the burqa, in fact burqas are not once mentioned in the Quran. What was stated is, essentially, that women ought simply dress modestly. Similar to now how some social justice extremists in America and other places are suggesting we start redesigning games to just make the characters dress a bit more modestly.

And the biggest problem is that if you ever given an inch to these sorts they try to take a mile. Imagine the site starts banning celebrity nude leaks. Okay. Well presumably you're also banning nudes taken of the celebrities without their knowledge. Well a full exposure upskirt shot? That's probably qualifies as well. A nipple slip? Who knows? It will never end because you will always have malcontents who have no stated goal and will never be sated as they view their level of peity by the excessiveness of their views and offensiveness towards the status quo. In fundamentalist Islam there are now some clerics who have begun calling for hijabs that only allow one eye to show to become the standard. And in their circles the cleric who wants only one eye to show are going to be seen as the most pious, until that becomes standard at which point perhaps the new extreme piety will be clerics who demand that the one eye also be covered by heavily tinted shades. And it will never end. As such I think it's wise to never let it begin.

Anyone can have nudes pulled from imgur and reddit now, just by saying they're that person and they don't give consent for that image to be on the site.

Bailey Jay has been using it to wipe her subreddit out. And it's not even full sets or anything, just one off images and gifs.

Yup, and it made it to the frontpage of Reddit via /r/funny.

The mods deleted it.

Hmmm, removed because it was 'not funny'.

Cant tell if they dont like being called out, or are agreeing that censorship is not funny...
