I'm so conflicted.

On one hand I'm done with Reddit and would be fine with no one being able to find all my old stupid comments.

On the other hand, I'm a digital hoarder. I can't even get rid of emails.

Shreddit will allow you to export all of your reddit posts to a .log file, then overwrite them all, then optionally even delete the original posts. I did this recently and several small subs which refused to participate in the blackout were totally destroyed because 1 in 3 comments in every thread (I was by far their most prolific commenter) suddenly disappeared. Broke pretty much the entire sub. The mod is trying to pick up the pieces but it ain't working too well. I pretty much answered every question people posted there, so there are tons of threads now such as:

Question?

Wow thanks that's awesome, worked perfectly!

Haha..... wow.

You ought to make a post here of your top Q&A's.

Please post instructions on how to export as a .log file. Thanks in advance. I want to execute this today.

That's great! Especially if you were a regular contributor on AskHistorians or something like that.

I'll probably go back from time to time and stare at my karma numbers while reminiscing about the good ol' days.

I checked my MySpace not too long ago. I remember agonizing over my top 8. That struggle was real. And holy fuck was I angsty. I want to bitch slap fourteen year old me. Really hard.

Same. Also, just like forum posts, if a useful post is full of redacted comments that could have answers I need that would suck.

[–] 0100001101110111 0 points 26 points (+26|-0) ago

That is part of the point. If people redact comments reddit is no longer useful so people do not visit it.

I'd be all for this, but I know I've answered at least a few questions that people may end up finding via a Google search at some point. I don't want to be worse than the asshole that fixes their PC problem on a random forum and never posts how they fixed it.

So you're saying you'd be all for this, but you still want to drive traffic to reddit?

If reddit has the answer to someone's technical problem, you can be guaranteed that the answer already exists somewhere else on the internet.

[–] Messiadbunny 0 points 4 points (+4|-0) ago

That's not necessarily true at all. I've answered questions about apps I've developed on Reddit that weren't elsewhere. I've answered and discussed things about PLEX development that's not available on their website outside of being a paid member and their forums are down at the moment. It's always nice to have a backup for information. It's not like I'm advertising for Reddit and bringing them droves of traffic and I'd rather not be completely vindictive to the community I've spent years with because I disagree with the way their company is managed.

I get it, Voat users are mostly disgruntled Reddit users. But I don't understand the attacks on the community as a whole, it's not like every user that hasn't migrated over is a personal enemy of mine. Reddit will continue to live on for years to come, with or without my comments. Keeping my comments there isn't hurting Voat and if it helps Reddit it'd be a few hits within a years time-frame so it's not my comments keeping them afloat.

[–] ack ago

That's why you should append a message to your comments saying why you're moving to Voat instead. It's a win-in, people know wy you're gone and where you are and it creates visibility for Voat!

one day all the answers will be on voat.

[–] Messiadbunny 0 points 8 points (+8|-0) ago

No, not necessarily. If you Google a specific computer/whatever problem and come up with an answer then you aren't inclined to register. I know I've perused thousands of IT/programming forums and never subscribed just because they had suggestions/answers to my problems/questions.

For how long until voat is overthrown and we all have to migrate to the NEXT digg/reddit/voat?

[–] prodigyx 0 points 15 points (+15|-0) ago

Why? Reddit was built by the users. Their OC is the only thing keeping reddit alive.

It is obvious from your stance that you have NEVER been a contributor to reddit. Otherwise you would be upset that YOUR OC IS BEING USED TO PROMOTE A NEFARIOUS AGENDA.

I think you would be more comfortable going back to your reddit hugbox and waiting for it to die along with all the mindless lurkers.

Or he could just have issues with the very concept of intellectual property. Even if I were to completely shut down my reddit profile, I wouldn't delete the comments because I believe information should be free, and if someone learns something because I shared it, well, that's why I shared it in the first place. If you want to delete your comments, fine, be my guest, but don't try to push your idea of ideological purity on others. They may just be following a different one entirely.

The comments' copyrights belong to their creators, so they can edit or delete them at will, for any reason of their choice, or no reason whatsoever, just because they feel like it.

Problem?

People, myself included, have spent years on that site developing the community and creating friendships. I don't want to go out quietly, I want to be shouting it out on every front page post I ever made, or ever top comment I ever had. They fucked that site up, and let us down, no shame in telling them that.

I seriously don't get the vindictive attitude that everyone now seems to have against the community as a whole. Sure, most of us are disgruntled with Reddit's management too. But why make the community that most of us have spent long periods of time with suffer because they haven't all instantly migrated to Voat?

[–] 404_SLEEP_NOT_FOUND 0 points 5 points (+5|-0) ago

Really. Reddit can go to hell, I don't plan on joining it in there. But others, are free to do what they want. I even up-voted this article as I hope some follow suit.

I know what you mean. The only reason I'd consider this is because I'm looking for a way to make Pao and the rest of the Reddit office acknowledge and repair the damage they've done. We've tried so much to get some sensible feedback and action from them, but nothing seems to work. To me it's a bit of a last resort to get my message across.

Perhaps a script that saves the comments, so it can be reversed?

[–] Violentlight 3 points 12 points (+15|-3) ago

I don't support erasing history. Might not seem like much to us now. But this is all insight into our culture and society for the future. History should be preserved and remembered. Especially now that we are in the digital age and its so ridiculously easy to save.

[–] frankenmine [S] 1 point 21 points (+22|-1) ago

I think future generations will be just fine without our cat pictures and pun threads.

Also consider that the admins themselves remove hundreds of accounts a day, every day, because they said the wrong thing about feminism or social justice.

Therefore, by your definition of preserving history, admins are doing the most harm.

1
1

[–] Violentlight 1 point 1 point (+2|-1) ago

Sure, theres alot that gets removed. As per running a community like this. But just because an artist erased something when creating their art, doesn't make the art worthless when its done.

[–] BadTechSupport 0 points 12 points (+12|-0) ago

By removing your own posts, you are removing the value ($) that you gave the site. No content = no value.

As to accessibility - is reddit scanned by archive.org? If so, your comments will live on for posterity.

[–] ForgotMyName 0 points 2 points (+2|-0) ago

Internet archive and similar projects are the only things that are going to be saving history. Companies like reddit will come and go and their databases will be wiped.

Lol what? Do you really believe this?

This has to be a troll

1
1

[–] Violentlight 1 point 1 point (+2|-1) ago

I'm not trolling. I think there is alot to be learned from history. So I don't see the benefit of destroying stuff that doesn't need to be destroyed. Thats all I'm saying. Not even commenting on the quality of what is being saved. Since its digital, its really easy to save. So save it all. It helps shape who we are. Provides insight.

Hah some of the stuff I have written I wouldnt want traced to my real life. But on the flip side, some of that stuff has helped people, and some of it has been really clever, and its helped formulate my thoughts. I still sometimes go back to posts years old because a topic came up with friends, and I had already thought out and explained things so clearly in a reddit post.

Maybe I'm blind, but I don't see and OVERWRITE button. I'm using Chrome Version 43.0.2357.81 (64-bit) and the latest version of Tampermonkey and the script.

There may be issues with recent versions of TamperMonkey. Try GreaseMonkey on Firefox if possible.
