Voat is hosted and incorporated in the US, and all traffic is channeled through CloudFlare. As far as I know this same kind of threat is just as possible for Voat. I'm really hoping that following this news @Atko can confirm that Voat has not received something like this. Is nowhere safe on the internet anymore?

No to learned helplessness. Fuck fear. I write whatever I want and I don't care about the consequences. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Learned_helplessness

Low earth orbit is not safe either :)

Does voat have a canary? That's our only real flag of an NSL. Besides that just assume all traffic is sniffed since voat is in the US

[–] supernatendo 0 points 3 points (+3|-0) ago

The canary isn't even safe to use any more.

Last I heard, removing a canary after receiving a letter is just as bad as telling people you have received a letter. Even places with these so-called "canary" clauses should be treated as though they are compromised.

I understand that the third fact makes the first one quite irrelevant, but aren't the first and second ones not true?

Many sites use something called a warrant canary in which they have something in their terms along the lines of "we have never received any national security requests". Because gag orders prevent the company from flat out stating they have been compromised, they remove the statement from their terms as a hint that they have been compromised. I would not rely on this method too much considering any judge would look at the use of a warrant canary and then look at the plaintiff as if they are idiots. I'm incredibly surprised Reddit did it at all and chances are the judge is going to be like "what the fuck dude".

Even if it works occasionally now, do not make the mistake that the government is stupid enough to fall for this for much longer. If anything they are happy letting people get cozy with the idea before telling businesses that any use of the tactic will result in detrimental penalties. Then people bumble along believing it's somehow legit and they are safe, when they aren't. The only true safe guard is to stop trusting companies based in the United States. Look what happened to the owner of Lavabit.com, he echoed the same sentiments after the government took his ass to a secret kangaroo court a thousand miles away and then cleared his bank accounts and pillaged his butt hole. To exemplify the ridiculousness of compromising all user information for the sake of an investigation for one user, they told the owner of Lavabit that his users 1. Had no expectation of privacy (even though they were using a privately encrypted email service) 2. The 4th amendment against unreasonable search and seizure did not apply because "the inspection was being carried out by a machine".

Don't expect other companies to be so ethical to shut down their entire operation rather than compromise user privacy. Lavabit is probably the exception, not the norm. So expect, now, that all of your data is compromised on Reddit. Makes me concerned that all of my former political rants from years ago are now punched in to the great NSA database and will reflect on me. That's their goal is to have profiles for all U.S. American citizens so they can punch in a name and identify dissidents.

Should have wiped all your comments when you still had the chance. Very sad its come to this.

Oh, you can bet your ass your political rants are already archived by the NSA. I would venture that ANYONE who posts any significant amount of anti-government, anti-police, anti-military, etc content has a folder on one of the NSA's many hard drives with their name, address, phone number, internet account names, family information, etc packaged with it.

The government sends out letters requiring a company to handover private info on all of its users.

The government threatens to prosecute and imprison anyone who tells people that the government has sent them the letter.

The "canary" was a clause at the end of a term of service agreement that said "Up until this date, we have not received any such letter."

The "canary" has been removed, signalling that they have now received said letter.

@atko, if voat doesn't have a warrant canary, it needs one today.

Voat doesn't have one because @Atko already got a letter. why know this because he hasn't responded to a single question about setting up a canary

I think at one point Voat did but it went away like last August I believe.

That's his own way of telling us his hands are tied.
The only way for @Atko to tell us the truth is NOT to reply to this thread.

The lack of canary gets rid of probably and drives it into the realm of definitely. The issuing of an national security has nothing to do with social justice or bullshittery of the admins/mods; in fact they're gagged from talking about this. This is the bullshittery of government/FBI intervention.

Pao wasn't even the problem, it's clear that the shareholders are the ones trying to make it more PC and therefore normie-friendly.

It's entirely possible she volunteered herself as a sacrificial lamb, while those same shareholders were able to secure her another position as compensation.

I would argue Spez is the one who wants to make Reddit as PC as possible FOR the shareholders, as he's the one who turned Reddit into the 'safe-space' it is today within days of coming back and taking over. If the shareholders really were so adamant about it the old owner would have done so long ago.

Reddit isn't publicly traded, so it doesn't have shareholders. Just clarifying. It's the admins' decision.

Is this why they changed their privacy policy at the beginning of this year, saying they'll share your info if you are naughty?
