/r/science has had stricter moderation than most of Reddit for a long time. It started because of all the stupid pun threads and jokes that were voted over actual relevant discussion. Criteria for deleting comments has only expanded since then. The problem with Reddit is that the admins, the moderators, and the users, suck. It's caught in a feedback cycle because the admins openly support a very hostile group of moral authoritarians, and the group thought conformity overwhelms any semblance of individualism.
