Anyone who claims some of the mods are getting older and more conservative is living in their own delusional bubble away from over all reality. But I guess to moderate liberals any form of censorship has to be from conservatives and not other liberals.

Reddit went from hard Libertarian to progressive hell hole.
Bernie Sanders is the bees knees.
Back when Reddit was decent Ron Paul was the bees knees.

Reddit was never a decently run website, never had decent atmosphere, never had decent moderators, never had decent management.

Probably the same idiot who down voted you.

The problem for the liberals is we know who is who on reddit and it isn't a conservative majority especially with the mods and SJW/SRS mods.

This whole right/left wing is like a circle. Once you get so far left it's like being right. Hence fascism is considered left.

Fascism is leftism because leftism is pro big government. The extreme of conservatism is anarchy.

That was my thought. These mods are in no way conservative.

"Reddit needs to build a better community..." It had a better community - that community left. It isn't coming back.

So how do we fix Reddit?

Euthanize comes to mind.

Personally my issue with reddit is the upvotes/downvotes for comments. I get concerned when I see something I disagreee with be so highly upvoted or downvoted and it also makes people self censor because they don't want to get downvoted. I know karma doesn't mean shit, but it still affects me a little when I get downvoted to shit.

This. It's not just about karma, the mass downvoting and manipulation of discourse is a form of censorship in it's own right. I also left reddit because of a witch hunt. I pissed off a bunch of angry trolls by daring to have a different opinion to them on their precious sub, and they followed me everywhere, brigading all my comments. It got to the point where I could no longer meaningfully participate in any discussion. They'd plant shills in the discussion to encourage hivemind voting and commenting, and they'd mass upvote themselves and downvote me. I began to feel like I was living in some alternate dimension where I'd have to constantly defend my normal and logical viewpoint. My only option was to self censor, and that just killed it for me.

When I was going through my comment history deleting it all prior to deleting my account, I noticed that this all began about 7-8 months ago. I went from being regularly upvoted to +10/20 to sitting at +1 or 0 for the majority of comments, with the occasional comment at -10 or more. When I set the page to list my comment history as "controversial", the only stuff that showed up was comments from the last 8 months or so. All my "top" comments were prior to that period.

As far as I can tell, what happened 8 months ago was that reddit started to shut down some subreddits that were a hive of assholes. Those assholes, lacking any better place to be, spilled out into other subreddits. They took over, and began waging a war against redditors who were creating content and contributing to discussions. That's my best theory anyway.

Some people would argue that euthanasia comes from a position of compassion. So long as it's patient led, I would agree.

I don't have any compassion for that website. It's been half a year. There are clear alternatives (including alternatives to this "bad" place)

She only seems to partially get the point. She tells of the sins of the administration but only blames the mods. I don't get her inability to take that last step and see that its rotten from the inside out.

I blame both parties pretty equally.

P.S. I'm a dude.

Yeah, there is no fixing Reddit without a complete administration change over to revert the policies back to honoring freedom of speech. The mods have gotten like they are because the admins allow and encourage it.

Complete opposite of here. I'm going to assume you don't have a lot of background of Voat. Atko and PuttItOut, the two admins here, have repeatedly removed mods that have started acting like Reddit mods. For example, v/AskVoat & /v/science (story here) have no mods anymore because the previous mods acted like this was Reddit. And even more recent, a mod of /v/worldnews was removed for deleting posts he didn't agree with.

Your article is well written, but I wonder why you hesitate to specify exactly which political notions are to blame? It's very relevant.

Ok, I'm going with the assumption this is you and you just made an acount. Sorry about the confusion. Your picture icon is a little small I looked again and it's clear now that I looked closer.

First thing block subvoat is your friend when the hate subvoats get to much.

After that, enjoy. We are rather opinionated here and don't shy from a good discussion.

It's taken her this long to figure it out and she seem to have to resort to long winded blow hard diatrIabes to process what we already knew nearly a year ago. She might just be too narcissistic and slow at processing things to be able to see things clearly.

First I'm a dude, don't know many chicks named Trent with facial hair.

Secondly, as I mentioned in my post I've been witnessing this for years. I'm obviously well aware of what is happening, and even stood up against censorship on MySpace about 10 years ago (fuck I'm old).

This isn't the first time this has happened to a major Internet property, and it probably won't be the last.

The timing of my post I must admit was influenced by the anniversary of Aaron Swartz's passing, discovering unreddit, and the new privacy policy. I just couldn't take it anymore, I had to say something.

Yep, as soon as the paragraph started about "how do we fix this" I was out. Its unfixable. They can't get rid of their advertising contracts and all the bullshit they've signed with marketers. There is no undoing whats been done. Its too far gone. Its been infiltrated by every fucking body from the Alphabet Soup to the Advertisers and MSM. Its trash.

Rotten from the top down. Admins website, admins control over servers, admins rules, admins software, etc. They can manage mods, or let them have free reign.

Today I learned censorship = conservatism... even if the stuff being censored is anything that doesn't fit the liberal agenda...

The problem with the words liberal and conservative is that they can mean a lot of things.

Yes, becoming more old testament and clamping down on free speech is one way you could be conservative, even if what you're clamping down on may be politically liberal. Conservatism beyond the scope of American politics can simply mean playing it safe.

The words liberal and conservative mean nothing now. If you identify as liberal you use conservative to describe everything you hate, and vice versa.

That's because the two political camps are at complete odds with one another.

Liberal and left leaning politics revolves around helping people who are less fortunate, and structuring tax so that the rich pay more. This would be things like subsidized tuition for poor kids, subsidized daycare, free bus passes, free healthcare, etc. Liberalism says not only that these things are preventable, but that the government have a responsibility to do something about them. It sees the value in providing government services that are useful for the average person living on a lower wage, rather than spending taxpayer money in ways that only benefit the rich.

Conservative and right leaning politics revolves around preserving the status quo, and taking the view that those who are less fortunate and in need of help are an unavoidable and natural consequence of a normal and free society. It says that you'll always have rich and poor people, and that furthermore any failure to become a rich person is your own fault and a result of laziness or lack of ability rather than injustices in society. This belief in pure meritocracy results in privatization of government services, tax breaks for corporations, and taxpayer money spent on investment in already successful companies. The general belief is that this will result in the creation of jobs.

A good analogy would be how a liberal and a conservative would react to a homeless person begging for change.

A liberal person would give spare change to the homeless person, saying something like "you need this more than I do".

A conservative person would ignore the homeless person, saying something like "should've studied in school/worked harder", and give their spare change as a tip at a restaurant instead.

The conservative person in this scenario would view the liberal person as "contributing to the homelessness problem". That is to say, by handing over your spare change you're encouraging homelessness. The liberal person would view the conservative person as "being the reason why the homeless man exists in the first place".

A well-written, thoughtful article. Someone please post this over at Reddit!! Of course, it'll be deleted and the user will be banned. ;) Redditors being herded like sheep:

"This tool lets you see Reddit comments that have been either deleted by the original poster, moderators, or edited by the user. You can do this with any post on Reddit by simply changing the URL to “unreddit.com/”. Once you start applying this to popular posts on r/politics, r/worldnews, r/announcements and other major subs anyone with eyes and a brain can immediately see significant efforts to censor Reddit comments, many of which are censored for what appears to be seemingly no reason. I’ve spent the weekend unredditing a lot of posts, and many moderators seem to be removing posts simply because they personally disagree with them (a violation of reddiquette), and others clearly have an agenda to censor certain narratives from their subreddits. Keep in mind this isn’t even content submissions we’re talking about, this is just comments. If this is happening to comments on such a massive scale, one can only imagine what is happening to actual submissions."

Well, all the comments highlighted in pink are deleted comments. The ones that are not highlighted seem to be the parent threads (that were not deleted) where all the comments below them were deleted. I guess the site creator wanted to include them so viewers would know the deleted comments were replies to a user's comment instead of the original thread (OP).

Reddit has become a curated billboard, nothing more. In order to increase revenue, it has become completely fake, and is no longer the user driven content aggregator it started out as. Its original value and reason for existing has ceased - to share and discuss content - making it not worth saving, in my opinion. It is now just pretending to be a user driven content aggregator, in order to serve you ads and propaganda disguised as posts.

At this point they might as well shut off the comments altogether, and just become another book of coupons and flyers.

Well, that old friend started acting like a total faggot one day. He kept interrupting me mid-sentence to tell me what I said was offensive, and eventually he forbid me from entering his house.

I don't give a shit if he dies.
