If anyone was going to rally over requiring the news to be truthful, it would be the neocons.

As I'm learning as I get older, no politician ever has the truth as their end game. One of the very few things all politicians believe in is Plato's noble lie. Then, once they've started justifying their lies, there is no difference to them between justifying noble lies that may actually benefit the people, and justifying not-so-noble lies that benefit themselves.

As we seem to have learned here on the internet recently, it doesn't take much to turn someone into a politician. Power corrupts, and it doesn't matter how much. President of the United States or moderator of /r/showerthoughts, there is no difference.

Difference in tactics. Most choose to lie in press conferences and campaign speeches. That group chooses to own and operate a 24 hour news station as well as most talk radio and have them lie for them.
