I am so tired of the general press giving out the completly false narrative that Reddit stories are controlled by user votes. It is actually completely false now and has been for many years.

I'd love to have numerical measurements of Reddit's story bans and removals, comment bans and removals, user bans, shadowbanning, and mod takeovers that can be released to the press to show Reddit's more rigid alliance to the Chinese or Iranian internet model than any user determined content site.

Just looking at r removalbot and having an automatic counter plus r uncensorship r undelete r haveibeenshadowbanned r moderation and a few more would get some interesting number if someone could write a script to count stories there versus su missions allowed or something. .i have also noticed a huge slow down in the pace of su mitted stories now in the news and politics genre as well as very little difference between the top rankings and hot and new ranking which is a good indicator that new story submissions that are allowed through the "chinese censorship wall" at reddit are few.

But it would be great to have real numbers.

Some bot programmer please consider that as a project.

Censorship ratio for each sub and shadowban ratio and mod rages etc.

It would be a great to have a place to post the mod rage comment when the little tyrants ban you as well. Lol

This information is important to circulate widely in the general press becuase most reddit users are still in the dark and dont understand that they are NOT seeing a huge amount of highly important material that is being secretly withheld from them . Getting that fact out into the general press by means of actual censorship measurement stories would be a good way to wake people up. After all they will never learn that on the front page of reddit

You do realize Voat isn't structural different than reddit? The same mechanisms that enable censorship there (i.e. unaccountable mods) are at play here.

It's the mods doing all the censoring and the cuckmins at Voat have shown no interest in dealing with this problem at home (i.e. eggnogg, she and every cancermod who has rage quit due to PV pressure and not because of any admin intervention).

The only thing keeping Voat from descending into a reddit-like censor fest is the good will of some of its initial users who actually value free speech.

INB4 but we have mod logs; Atko will protect us; the adminz ruined reddit!!1one

On Voat, you get to know that something of yours was deleted. Thereafter, you can make your case to everyone else.

I guess the difference is nothing can really be completely deleted from voat except for the person who posted it. Sure, you could get a power-hungry mod, but people would see what was being removed, and would either demand a change or leave the subverse for another (see /v/askvoat).

I agre. One of the reasons i have been hesitant to spend too mich time here is a system that starts with moderation (reddit began without moderation) is doomed to follow in reddits path and i just dont want to make another switch. However reddit has become so annoying i find myslef coming here more.

Both reddit and voat are suffering from an extreme lack of new submissions now . The news cjanges at a crawlong pace. Sorting by "new" across multiple subreddits shows that only the fist q0 or 20 storoes have been submitted in the past 5 hours.

I already suggested to voat that they do an automatic story feed from some sources to increase content.

The most common excuse of the mods for their arbitrary censorship, "if the other mods agree with you I will support their decision."

Percent of comments at deleted:

Default subreddits

Non-default subreddits

Can't say how this compares to other places on the internet. Based on data for all time, up to 5 months ago. Would be nice to see how the trends changed over time.

Source?

Also if this was done with the old comment corpus from Stuck_In_The_Matrix it does not distinguish between [deleted] and [removed]

That's the data set I used. And yes, it doesn't distinguish between deleted and removed. I'm too lazy to redo it. Here's the original post: https://www.reddit.com/r/dataisbeautiful/comments/3dxf11/oc_censorship_in_default_subreddits_compared_to/

Here's a list of McDonald's-related deletions from /r/undelete and /r/longtail just in the last month. Note that these deletions include both mod-initiated deletions, and automod takedowns based on a large volume of user reports. In some cases the posts were reinstated, such as the /r/HailCorporate one.

I've ordered them based on the damage they could cause to McDonald's image.

Thank you. It is a good example.

Is there a bot or curl pho program that can autocount these things?

Most of the heavy lifting is done by the bots on /r/undelete and /r/longtail. After that I just use Reddit's web-based search and format the lists in vim. A script could easily be created that uses the search API, however, maybe even with PRAW or simliar. That's a good idea

Talk to /u/Stuck_In_The_Matrix over there. Now that removed comments return [removed] as the body it should be possible for him to build some stats on comment removal rates by rescanning old comments.

It's just as censored as other mainstream forums. You're okay on Reddit as long as you stay on innocuous sub-forums like 'aww' , 'music' or 'movies'. I mean, there's really no reason to get into a rant-filled topic on those forums anyway. But any time you discuss serious issues, then you feel the wrath of Reddit's censorship. You cannot have honest discussions of immigration, religion, race, crime, or even politics...on forums about politics or crime. So those filtered "open, free" Reddit discussions resemble something one would say in front of a conference. Just gaping holes in logic and analysis. I have seen speeches in British parliament that are more open than a Reddit forum.

Yes.

R/removalbot really exposes how censored r/europe is about immigration policy discussion
