It can be a strain at times, but the key is to take a step back and ask yourself if it's really worth it getting emotionally invested in some idiot's opinion on a random website. There are idiots everywhere in life, and you alone are responsible for how you let yourself react.

Besides, there've been times when I've gone into a conversation like that with one very clear impression and, because I didn't escalate the situation, ended up having a real discussion and leaving with new information and/or my mind changed. Reddit would be a far better place if everyone tried doing that.

You're absolutely right. People have a bad habit of getting defensive and allowing their emotions to take control. I'm guilty of this from time to time, and I realize I'd be a better person if I approached all situations like you did with that mod.
