I have been waiting and watching for the last year or so as people have gotten more and more fed up with reddit.

It has been getting slowly worse but then Gamergate happened, followed by the fappening, followed by the Automod scandals.

Now this is the event which I think will see people pushed over the edge, I would estimate Voat grew by ~2000 users today.

Would be good if /u/atko could give out some numbers with regards to new people signing up / unique visitors just in the past few days. I wouldn't be surprised if there was a big spike.

Honestly since I only frequent the smaller subs of my interests, I didn't notice much. The thing that started to piss me off was when a lot of the AMAs were being done with assistance from, can't remember her name - veronica or something, it just all seemed to set up. Like reddit is telling famous people come, don't worry, someone will hold your hand and help you answer all the questions with a witty response that will get reddit love but avoids answering the question. Then I started seeing more and more interference by mods and admins and just felt like users weren't controlling their experience anymore, talk about a dictatorship by chosen assembly, peoples republic of reddit :P

+1 for that idea, (except not, cos I've run out fo votes :( )

Seeing traffic stats for the last few days /weeks would be really interesting in terms of assessing how much impact the posts from metaredditcancer actually had.

Victoria is her name, and I have to agree with you. Getting to interact with a celebrity is great but when they're not even the ones typing in the responses then how do we know they're formulating them in the first place?

Reddit was great entertainment for a while. It's sad that they've allowed a takeover by power hungry people with extremist views and a penchant for censorship.

Yup. I finally jumped ship after debating it for quite awhile. It'll be slow going, but word of mouth will spread and hopefully voat grows rather exponentially as more people hear about it/realize reddit is going the way of digg.

Automod scandals.

I missed this, what was the drama with automoderator?

0
2

[–] 47824? 0 points 2 points (+2|-0) ago

They were several but one was /r/technology auto-banning posts with words like snowden, tesla, nsa.

The other was /r/blackladies using a mod bot to Auro-ban people based on their posting history, i.e if you had ever posted in mensrights then the bot automatically banned you.

Oh hi I'm a new user.

Voat has a much better mobile site than reddit.

Oh, they fixed the mobile site? Awesome!

[–] Jeska 0 points 0 points (+0|-0) ago

Agreed. It still has its quirks though. For example the login/register link is laying on top of the buttons in the row to make a new topic etc., at least on iOS.

We need a voat app

[–] internet_nomad [S] 0 points 5 points (+5|-0) ago

I have never been big on using mobile apps but I am sure it makes it easier for a lot of people. How is the regular website on a mobile browser? easy on the eyes and have all the same features? At the end of the day if there is enough demand for something it will happen, so hopefully an app will get made soon.

On my nexus 10, portrait mode works great, giving you just the links, and landscape will include the sidebar, etc.

On my HTC One M8 though... Portrait is almost unusable and landscape is still pretty scrunched.

Edit: this was with chrome on both. Haven't tried others yet.

On my Galaxy Tab everything looks great, just like the desktop version.

It's easy on the eyes for sure and it's basically the same as looking at any other site on a phone. (Somewhat annoying). But that's my personal preference. I'm a mobile user for reddit and now voat!

I don't use my phone for browsing, but a ton of people do so a mobile app would go a long ways.

I checked out the API but for now it's passive, no up/downvoting or posting APIs so far. (But it's possible to create a "read-only" app.)

a lot people are sitting on the fence with two tabs open today, reddit and Voat

Yup. I haven't abandoned Reddit by any means, but I also haven't been aware of any of the things revealed by the recent event. I will have a foot in both places as I see what continues to go on over there.

Same here but I've mostly given up the front page of reddit and I'm sticking to my smaller subs.

[–] internet_nomad [S] 0 points 1 points (+1|-0) ago

With regards to the things that have happened recently, If you don't care for what is happening outside of the smaller subs then it isn't a problem really. It wouldn't have much of an effect on any individual. If you have the time and want to make a judgement based on principle then I would advise you to try and read up on it. I wouldn't be surprised if reddit post an announcement soon of some sort regarding these issues.

Yea that's exactly it. It doesn't really affect me; however, there is a deep seeded issue with what is happening with reddit and it doesn't sit well with me. I can't rightfully let it happen and pretend I don't notice.

The interview was really good. A lot of information I think a lot of people didn't consider. Thanks. I would advise everyone to give it a listen.

Hopefully. But with success this site will invariably see a migration of the SJWs over here to set about taking it over. I bet they're already laying the groundwork after based Frederick mention voat on his twitter.

There's already a /v/shitvoatsays The Admins should shut that shit down and prevent the spread of SJW meta subs that are just brigading outposts.

[–] internet_nomad [S] 0 points 5 points (+5|-0) ago

I get what you mean but I really have no issue with people voicing their opinion, freedom of speech and all. It's a problem when those peoples opinions start to dictate what others can and can't say or do. As long as Voat doesn't give in to any one specific groups opinions of how things should be, and everything is left free of unneeded restrictions then it should be ok.

Hell no. The way to fight against those who would limit our freedom of speech is not to silence them, but rather, to use our power of speech to deconstruct their bullshit, ridicule them, shame them, and so forth as appropriate.

One does not get much success fighting fire with fire.

this will be the the fifth major site that I'm aware of they will attempt ruin. Reddit, Digg, Tumblr and half chan.

These fuckers have it down to a system. They likely already have shill accounts acting normal here, starting subverses and blending in waiting for a their time to strike.

It's depressing to think about.

[–] gatordontplaythatsht 0 points 0 points (+0|-0) ago

Absolutely. Let all exist together and they'll figure it out themselves. SRS is only such a problem on reddit because they take advantage of the censorship rules to silence opposition.

[–] themule 0 points 0 points (+0|-0) ago

See, I'm against any kind of censorship.

[–] PM_ME_DOEGECOINS 0 points 0 points (+0|-0) ago

Unlike on reddit, SRS is not in bed with admins (I hope...), simply don't give them attention and they'll get bored.

0
0

[–] Tikka 0 points 0 points (+0|-0) ago

I feel as if SRS doesn't even need to get involved with admins on a site that is still relatively unestablished. All it takes is multiple SRS members to get mod on as many verses as they can get their hands on through relatively normal means of attaining said position. Once that happens, it's their game to lose. What we need is a way of purging mods as a community but that is easier said than done.

Wasn't the case on Reddit either for the first few years, but as with all things modern, any organization which is not explicitly right-wing will always shift left over time.

4chan had to pretty much self destruct for the migration to happen, let's just hope reddit pulls something just as big.

[–] internet_nomad [S] 0 points 2 points (+2|-0) ago

I think 4chan had its exodus with people moving over to 8chan. I feel like its a move for what people are use to, obviously some people mix between. I think that Voat resonates well with the usual reddit user and for those looking to move somewhere, Voat feels the most familiar. Reddit is on a downward spiral at the moment and will need to do some damage control, but they will have lost a lot of users because of it.
