I noticed this as well, especially on any type of advice subs. It's so toxic, you get attacked harshly. There is just a negative vibe on the whole site. Most front page posts are always cats or children. The whole stigma of what is allowed and what was funny, is just plainly super politically correct.

You can't say anything without offending someone. The mods have gotten out of control censoring and nuking posts. You can't have an open debate about most things.

It's really a shame. Used to be able to have some great conversation on that site. Anything honest just gets buried in downvotes or outright removed.

It's all designed to intentionally make you hate certain groups of people. What's happening at Reddit is by design and very strategic. They want to divide people and get us all hating and mistrustful of oneanother. Do not trust reddit.

I think total honesty ends up creating an uncomfortable amount of cognitive dissonance with a large part of the population.

Most of us grew up with some random combination of 'us vs. them' narratives pushed on to us by older, more experienced people we were biologically programmed to trust, and it can be difficult to break those down and restructure them more rationally when they've been interwoven with all your thoughts your whole life. A lot of people have too much other shit going on trying to get through each day - sometimes shit they brought on themselves, other times not - to bother with this sort of introspection. So they simply avoid it in every way they can, from passively facilitating censorship to turning a blind eye on wholesale slaughter for profit.

Oh yeah, and they can't talk online to other people who weren't raised the same way without degenerating into childish insults, because they've been too busy with the shitstorms they call lives to develop real arguments. They're just parroting what they've been fed, shaking it off, then moving on to the next 'less mean' thread about a heroic cat or something.

One side effect of this, in my recent experience, is that the people who tend to think more about things and become equipped to deliver insightful comments on potentially interesting posts tend to very much not want to wade through the sea of piss which makes up the apparent majority, especially once they realize that much of their insight is unwelcome. This is why I abandoned comment sections almost everywhere but became a massive reddit addict back before 2010.

I still haven't decided yet whether all this is fixable through culture change, or if it's yet another indication that our species is probably doomed in its current biological form.

I was only there 2 years and it de-escalated fast before I deleted my account a couple months ago. I wrote a non-threatening message to mods at r/offmychest about how they could better run their sub after being banned for no reason other than subscribing to FPH(to comment about a knee injury thread, seriously nothing hateful). TL;DR response 'Enjoy your ban, the all-powerful mods have spoken, now go away.' So I tried to get more insight from admin help with a single in-depth paragraph, they respond "No one's going to read all that, what a waste of my time, mods can do whatever they want as long as it doesn't spill over into other subs" wut? Fucking pricks. But whatever, safe spaces make ad revenue, so good riddance reddit I guess.

It's interesting, because SJWs and their sympathizers like to tell how toxic and hateful are users of coontown, FPH and other subs, yet when they migrated to voat, reddit became more bigoted than ever.

[–] smallkittenfeet 2 points 109 points (+111|-2) ago

Here is the thing about SJWs, they have a mental illness. They think everyone but them is wrong and "racist" or whatever buzzword they use these days.

When in reality, they are the idiots, the intolerant ones. The phrase "I'm only tolerant of people who agree with me" describes every SJW ever.

The problem is that it has become super toxic here too.

this is a polarization, I no longer feel like I am among peers in either group because everywhere culture war mentalities are rising

the issues and politics both sides are focusing on are distractions to me, and neither side seems to have a deep understanding of underlying issues, capacity for self awareness and criticism, nor a dedication to larger consistent ethical framework.

Both communities are descending into deranged extremism, promoting their own divisive figures and arguments, and failing completely to build a coherent coalition. in fact it seems like any positive narratives in both communities are sabotaged twice as fast as anything else.

I am becoming very disillusioned with the conflict and concerned about the low quality of information and thinking dominating in both camps

true respect for human and civil rights for all persons is almost absent, and a true dedication to egalitarian ethics is virtually a target painted on your back

You are not alone, I just keep on promoting critical thinking one post at a time. It's convenient that any large platform becomes highly polarised by a few extreme prolific ideologues, undermining the power a world wide free forum could have, it's almost like an intentional ping to one of our most fundamental attributes, our tribalist nature, distracting us long enough to entrench current power systems past our ability to turn the tide.

[–] AustNerevar 0 points 2 points (+2|-0) ago

this is a polarization

This is exactly how I feel. There's no middle ground any more. Just like American politics, politics have grown polarized. You're either a liberal or a conservative, a RedPiller or an SJW. I've been an MRA for around two years or so now and things are vastly different than when I first became interested in gender equality. SJWs always accused MRAs of being RedPillers and now they've done it for so long that it's starting to become true. I keep seeing the people who used to be in support of gender equality fall into the same trappings that feminists fell into when third wavers first starting earning the label of SJW. I get praised when I criticize Anita Sarkeesian and then lambasted by the same people when I stand up for trans rights.

We've spent a long time trying to urge people that Voat isn't a den of bigotry, it's a haven of free speech and then I see some moron going off and calling a black police officer a "ni**er" because he was guilty of corruption (yes, he could very well be an asshole, but his race has no bearing on it).

Fuck's sake, Libertarianism used to actually be a party worth supporting, but now the Koch Brothers and similar politicians have drive Republicans into the libertarians spaces because they think that it's a type of neo-conservatism. I think when I saw /r/libertarian throw a shitfit over net neutrality is when I realized that I could no longer call myself a Libertarian, or at least not the modern usage of the term. liberals have a problem with me because I believe in gun rights and am against modern feminism. The conservatives have a problem with me because I believe in equality, freedom of the internet, and hate big business. The libertarians hate me because I'm not an anarchist and I think there's a point to government.

I hate this country's politics and its cultures. Everyone has consolidated into one of two camps. And if you don't want to be grouped into either camp, both sides will claim you belong to the other side and crucify you for not conforming. It's fucking asinine and it makes me just want to give up and migrate to another country.

0
1

[–] RedLeader 0 points 1 points (+1|-0) ago

This is what made me pay attention to GamerGate. They aren't saying any one race of people are the problem, their enemies are unethical journalism and oppressive "politically correct" narratives that the MSM keeps backing.

[–] NomenStulti 0 points 7 points (+7|-0) ago

IIRC, somewhere in this video, Dave Rubin explains the differences between Progressives (aka SJWs) and Libertarians as he sees them (and I'm paraphrasing here):

Progressives love groups: Gays, muslims, every race you can think of, women, men (supposedly), poor people, etc etc etc. but hate individuals. If you disagree with them on a single point, you are instantly labeled a racist, bigot, homophobe, misogynist etc. He says Progressives are more likely to remove friends on social media in order to create an echo chamber of people who agree with them.

On the other hand, Libertarians hate groups: they hate the government, the IRS, organized religion in many cases, anti-gun organizers, progressives, democrats, republicans, liberals and conservatives etc. etc. but love individuals. You meet a guy from the IRS, sure, as a Libertarian you'd love to see that place burned to the ground, but this guy isn't responsible for that. Want to have a beer?

Not a perfect comparison, but I do think it at least partially explains why progressives hate each other so much.

0
3

[–] lasercow 0 points 3 points (+3|-0) ago  (edited ago)

progressives are not SJWs, and progressives are still most interested in income inequality issues and the class conflicts.

people with a social justice agenda are simply a slice of the progressive coalition, but if you are talking social politics and engaging in conversations with no economic or political substance you often get caught up in identity politics.

identity politics is pretty toxic in the political environment. you are right in thinking that libertarians take a high road on identity politics but it cant be completely ignored.....the key is to keep identity politics from becoming tribal.....key internet stupid groups are going full tribal.....and key real world groups are either decades behind adjusting to these issues or are overreaching in bad directions. individual liberties are not being respected

I am not being very coherent but at least I am not reducing this to the black and white 5th grade education version

Reddit went full retard. All of the smart people left. Only retards remain. Now it's a bunch of half-wits flinging poop at each other and bragging about their latest episode. I don't miss it. I don't even care if Reddit dies entirely. Let it be another Tumblr. Those people can stay over there and we can have real conversations over here without mod censorship and other garbage.

Half a million soccer moms showed up and crashed the party after 4-5 years of unfiltered, uncensored, de-corporate window into the internet of regular people. Reddit is where 4chan and the mom who knows 5 people in the grocery store in Kansas collided head on and you're seeing a corporate reaction to this collision. Its like they were feeling each other up in a dark closet, someone turned the lights on and its an edgy intelligent software engineer with long hair and a former cheer leading trophy wife milf. They're both a little confused, both a little turned on and both totally freaking the fuck out. They thought they won when Ellen started to initiate certain policies, but when she got let go they did what most people like them do, they get passive aggressive and really touchy about shit.

The internet is a really weird place, and it totally goes against the walled off, politically correct and artificial facade that many Americans and Westerns have created for themselves. In the 60's people took drugs to make the world weird, now the world is weird and people take prosaic and are extremely politically correct to make it bearable.

The reason using the philosophy of free speech is good for a subreddit like 'nazis' (for example) is because it brings their arguments into the public spectrum, where they can be thoroughly torn apart and its corpse left written on for people to be reminded of. When you start censoring things left and right you pressure those things into dark corners where they can manipulate and argue within their own little bubble. This is the very fabric of free speech and the whole concept really irks people because you have people who blindly believe its culturally acceptable for a black person to get pissed off at a white person for saying 'nigger' when there's 3 dozen records produced a year blasting it in every college campus in the fucking country. Those two opposing ideologies are colliding head on and now you have politically correct people screaming murder, 4chan laughing like the trickster archetype it is, and a bunch of really stupid ignorant people who just want cats and think anything of intellectual substance is 'gay'. Those people also play a really important role because they don't like any kind of conflict or political anything. I'm fine with someone telling me I can't say nigger, I'll defend that person's right to argue with me, but I just cannot stand the one person who's like, 'Oh i'm not political, I think its all kind of ridiculous'. Okay, you mean you're just too fucking intellectually lazy to partake in the discussion so you brush it off as disinterest. You know why people aren't interested in science? They're fucking stupid.

If I had to guess I'd say it's because they're still pretty pissed off about everything that happened before, during, and after the Fattening and all the other bannings. They know that Reddit is going to shit but for some reason they can't leave. They have to stay there. So they get angry. They get even angrier because they can't leave. So they take it out on everyone and everything they can, even eachother. I've seen it happen in other dedicated communities.

what hate and insanity?

I've seen a little hate, but what's so bad about that? Why have we gotten to a point in society that hate is so insufferable? As long as that hate is just words and nothing else, who cares? On the internet, we could all use that slippery "well if they are serious, then we should take it seriously" argument, but the odds don't bear that out.

Hell, I'd even venture to say that its not actually possible to avoid hate altogether. Unless we just make our lives so bland that we'll never get into any conflicts about anything because we'll never be passionate enough about anything to warrant any passionate disagreement.

Bring on the hate, I say. As long as its just words and doesn't translate into actions, bring it on. It could be beneficial to be able to release pent up frustrations at our society.

The thing is reddit was never really intelligent. To me it seemed that it was a bunch of people making shit up and acting like they are experts on it or something. It also seemed like there was no real discussions happening. Every "discussion" I've seen on that website ended with the most popular opinion massively downvoting the other side of the argument. That or it was just a huge circlejerk and people complaining about the circlejerk.

Unreasonably tight content restrictions almost always point to at least one or two SJW mods on the mod team, and the SJW-heavy communities they curate by banning for even slight anti-SJW commentary.

I know that /r/legaladvice is suffering from this very problem. Can't claim knowledge about /r/trashy and /r/photoshopbattles one way or the other. However, you will see the exact same dynamic at play on almost all default subs, and many major subs.
