I used to use Reddit constantly, and for about 5-6 years. I've gone back recently and made a few posts, and the comments have become downright abusive. So far, I've had users on /r/legaladvice lay in to me for my emotional reaction to a police altercation, while providing no legal advice at all. On /r/trashy, any post that users disagree with gets slammed with hateful insults. I've even had a mod mock me after deleting a post on a major sub.
It also seems like post restrictions have become so tight that content is hard to submit. I had to make eight attempts at a post on /r/photoshopbattles. I actually gave up on it out of pure frustration.
Here's the deal; I'm not thin-skinned. It doesn't bother me as a person, but it seems to have escalated sharply over the past few months. There used to be a couple of pleasant people in the bunch who would at least suggest something helpful, but the trend seems to have shifted hard towards pure trolling and griefing. And with little (or no) mod intervention. The only things I see get deleted these days are comments about race and religion, and not much else.
What has caused such a drastic, and rapid change? Is it a change in the user base, or just my imagination?
Edit - Thanks for all the responses. Glad to know I'm not nuts. Voat has been a pretty great community so far, so keep it up. I think this has been a good lesson for me on how I treat posts I may not agree with when I'm browsing new stuff. I should be more constructive, I think!
