Is it illegal to assist in blackmail? By using your influence to broadcast far and wide the information the blackmailer wants to make public?

It's worse than that

Later, Ryan tells me, Geithner promised him that if he could get Gawker to kill the story, Geithner would bring his HUD complaint to President Obama.

So Ryan (the blackmailer) claims that Geithner (the victim) asked him to kill the story in return for bringing a HUD complaint to Obama.

Look at that again. Bringing a HUD complaint to Obama because his brother is an ex Treasury Secretary. Does it really seem likely the brother of every ex Obama admin official can bring their escort's eviction cases to Obama and get him to intervene? The whole thing is bullshit. "Ryan" may as well be a Gawker staffer since they concealed his identity.

Fuck Gawker.

The comments are uniformly hostile too

This is the grossest thing I’ve ever read here in a decade, and that’s even when they were just a spiteful gang of nerds who couldn’t get hired with real publications.

...

Why is this published here?

Why is Gawker outing him?

Where is the proof he offered to bring it to Obama’s attention if the story was killed? That is the only thing that would make this newsworthy. Even then I’d give him a pass because of how fucked up the entire situation is.
