TL;DR: This sub is very populous and active. Many voat users want to subscribe to know what's going over at that other site, but rightfully don't their front page dominated by posts they consider irrelevant. Please help me in raising the post quality here a little bit.
Long winded Genghis_Khan text:
If it's not already obvious, I am pretty lenient with how I moderate this sub. Fact is, I see this place as serving a dual purpose. Openly, this is a place to post and have discussions on the latest news and current events (and controversy) happening at that other site. The slightly more subtle secondary purpose is that it is a place for frustrated users to let out some steam instead of yammering incessantly about reddit in other subs. However, since many people here are often in the same state of mind, it isn't surprising when some - and I'm just being honest here - substandard content gets upvoated and made very visible.
So what am I considering substandard content?
- A reaction gif
- An image macro (not to be confused with a meme)
- A text post along the lines of "I left reddit because of [reason]"
- A post announcing the user was shadowbanned
- A post about the ex-CEO that is fucking irrelevant (seriously, this is not an Ellen Pao hate sub)
- A screen shot of a post that has already been linked to or archived and is on the front page
- A direct link to a post that already has a screen shot or an archive link on the front page
- An archive link to...I think you get it. Please read the sub before posting.
Do you see where I am going here?
The fact is, if things keep trending the way they are now, I'll have to become more active as a moderator. Eventually, I'll be overwhelmed and need to add more moderators, who will in turn act accordingly. In the end, what we will likely see is a reversal from the relaxed nature the sub currently has to one where if your post doesn't meet certain criteria, it will have to be removed. I would much rather the user base simply be a little more choosy about what they submit and what they upvoat.
Remember, this is not reddit. Many of the types of posts that are acceptable there are simply not up to par here (unless the sub is specifically for those types of posts). For being one of the top subverses, this one has been lagging a little behind in this regard. Since I know for a fact that the low effort "shitposting" is a primary reason many people here left the other place I think it's time we stepped it up a little bit.

Well said. All of it. I want to know what's actually going on, not have a circlejerk. And while we are at it, lets try to make everything about voat better than Reddit as well. I don't see it as a Reddit alternative. We are building something new. My small part is trying to help with better design for subs, specifically the banners. If you have a sub, or see a sub that needs a banner you can submit banner requests to /v/bannerrequests, or message a mod to request a banner for their sub. Also, if you are handy with graphic design or photoshop please feel free to subscribe and jump in to help out with the requests as they come in.

I'll offer up /v/fort (Friends Of Reddit Transparency) for any and all reddit shitposting to deflect the low effort stuff, will you help promote it as a viable alternative in the sidebar?
This was IMO one of the biggest patterns missing on reddit, promoting a place to put the stuff you don't want in your sub.
If /r/worldnews promoted /r/worldpolitics for instance or /r/politics cooperated with /r/politic instead of fighting it.

Thanks for offering this. I'm going to seriously consider it.

I've also created /v/shitredditspez for documenting Spez's glorious new vision for reddit.

It's a shame you can't have a way for mods of one subverse to move posts to another one. So you'd have a MeanwhileOnReddit.deleted as a default for mods move to. However they could also have /v/fort as an alternative if the mods of /v/fort allowed it.
So you wouldn't really have deletion, just moving.

That is a brilliant solution.

This is why we can't have nice things. I agree with you.

This required effort
Edit: hit post too soon! I agree with you, just your username always makes me think of Trek and that scene, even though you are of the Genghis type of Kahns.

This subverse needs more active moderation. I am seeing A LOT of duplicate posts and it's really frustrating that people aren't taking two seconds to see if something's already been posted or not.
Yishan's "epic comment" from last night was posted three[1] different[2] times[3].

Very well said. Thank you!

This is what happens when you get what you want --- people from reddit migrating to voat.
[–] Frank_Castle 0 points 2 points 2 points (+2|-0) ago
Who says we want people migrating from reddit to voat?
[–] WakkaWAKKA 0 points 2 points 2 points (+2|-0) ago
I don't. But it's probably going to happen anyway.

This needs to be a stick on the top of Voat. Just because people can't downvoat yet, doesn't mean it's carte blanche for shit posting.
