I know Imgur was created FOR reddit, but I thought it was separately owned. Why should we avoid it?

From what I understand, they are using many of the same censorship policies as reddit.

Nope, a single VC firm (Andreessen Horowitz) has the main chunk of imgur and a big holding in reddit. reddit also has a direct stake in imgur.

Some of reddit's investors have also invested millions of dollars into imgur. They're not independent. When reddit's board makes a decision, they do so with a view to favor imgur and shut out competitors, and vice versa. This is almost certainly what happened with the hard banning (changed to a soft ban, when exposed) of slimgur site-wide.
