Isn't that sort of petty? I mean, there's a reason I'm on Voat - I'm frustrated with reddit too and am happily convincing friends to make the switch - but isn't forcing people - stripping them of that choice - the exact same kind of BS attitude that drove us away from reddit in the first place?

You know, plenty of companies block reddit because they want their employees to actually work rather than waste their time during work hours

Blocking reddit for productivity reasons I have no problem with - though the OP should probably block voat as well. Blocking it out of spite and by abusing your power as implied by the OP is a totally different thing to me.

Except then the employee spends their time building workarounds for your blocks.

Pretty soon they'll be blocking Voat too.

I just think it's classic hilarious BOFH stuff. But maybe that's just old Sys Admin me talking.

Yup. People should be allowed to make their own choice.

Can you make it automatically redirect from Reddit to Voat?

We want quality users here, not the hoi polloi.

Just did this. reddit.com now throws the user to https://voat.co.

Please explain how this is different from the censorship that made most of us leave reddit in the first place.

Or one notch up, do a URL rewrite so the address bar still shows it as reddit!

[–] polymorphist 1 points 13 points (+14|-1) ago

Please don't. This is incredibly dishonest. On top of that, browsers will throw up if the user uses reddit over https.

It's reddit avoidance day. He's just doing his part. Besides, the answers you want are probably on Stack Overflow.

If you're implying that you blocked access to reddit because you personally don't like it, then wouldn't that be the same as reddit preventing you from seeing something they don't like? The solution is to provide a better alternative - not force.

[–] LittleBobbyTables 1 points 3 points (+4|-1) ago

agreed. the correct solution is to show an intermediary page that says "are you really sure you wish to support fascism by venturing over there when you can go to voat.co instead and support a happy, healthy world" and give the user a choice.

People at work aren't subject to the same rules/rights when they are using work property or bandwidth. If their systems administrator wants to make a change to content filtering that's his or her prerogative & depending on the company their job. I keep reddit open at work and know we have a couple users, but not too many. I did that because I like reddit and didn't see it impacting work. Was it fair for me to give reddit special treatment? No, so now they don't get special treatment anymore.

Reddit is a big information source with very specialist subcommunties. Do you need r/all - no.

But you may need r/your_professional_field. At least I need every few weeks the help of an online community because a rare problems shows up both in private and professional life.

Many website bans are short sighted. The city marketing office of a small town right next to my home town once blocked facebook during a their new fancy facebook only marketing campain, because the employees spend to much time on facebook.

The "solution" here is to not be an asshole and waste your employer's dime by fucking around on reddit when you should be working. Way too many entitled shits here, butt-hurt that somebody won't allow them to screw around on company time.

you're right, but to be fair a lot of users here (including me) work in IT in some capacity, so there might not be anything inherently wrong with browsing reddit at work

sometimes when i'm coding it can be helpful to look away and tune my brain into something else for a few minutes - my boss actually expects us to do that

and if you do support calls then there isn't much else to do in between other than homework or dick around on the internet

but for the most part, you're right

I know I'm not the original commenter, but I hate it because of Dell's tech support. Getting help on anything is like pulling teeth.

I've also been told you can't create VPN tunnels to CISCO systems, but I'm pretty sure that's because I was using Dell's tech support.

As a human being I condemn comparing the redirection of a website to nazi beliefs.

That is a common phrase in the industry. I simultaneously condemn and forgive you for your ignorance. ;-)
