I agree. Also, I didn't like the 100 upvoat barrier to voting at first, but I think it has the effect of encouraging good behavior in a way that doesn't feel too imposing. It's like a reminder right off the bat to think before you downvote. Anyway, it does seem way friendlier over here.

Totally agree! It promotes a way friendlier attitude right from the start, like, we're all in this together. Discuss, add content, speak your mind... You won't get buried for it, and those that might downvoat have clearly already proven themselves to at least have added something to the community before being able to.

Edit: also, love the username. His Dark Materials is awesome

That's great! Really glad to see you enjoying things here. Overall, that has been the tone of the community and something really worthwhile to maintain. I think it shows an embrace of a different philosophy: many people have things of value to add and we want to hear these things. I believe this to be in contrast to Reddit: we have determined these things are worth knowing and we will allow you to discuss them.

The cynic in me is thinking the friendlier attitude is because of the smaller population on this site as of now. I wasn't there early on in the other site, but I'd come across many who lamented at missing the good ol' days.

its like Chris Rocks expensive bullet joke. If you make bullets extremely expensive and some one is shot, you know they deserved to get shot. here if they are downvoated they deserve it.

I wish people would stop begging for upvoats though. I really hate the repost karma whoring.

I think it's also a product of only having so many upvoats to give in a 24 hour period as a new account. I imagine it would be somewhat lower if chronic voters were able to keep their behavior rather than limit the overall number of voats.

I've never understood the way that downvotes are thought of on reddit. There's no reason why a downvote should be considered a personal attack any more than an upvote should be considered a present. It doesn't mean anything about you personally, votes just mean "this should be higher/lower on the page and more/less visible". I've always thought it was misguided the way some subreddits banned downvoting entirely. It doesn't matter what number is next to your comment or submission, the sorting just depends on whether the surrounding comments or submissions have numbers that are higher or lower.

Part of the problem with that, though, is just psychology. It's pretty demonstrable that an already-downvoted comment on reddit gathers more downvotes just by being downvoted to begin with. It also invites harassment of that user (which gets upvoted) and a vicious cycle starts. Generally subreddits with no downvote option have better behavior from their subscribers/posters.

I don't think we should do away with downvoating, but I like that it's restricted until you prove that you can contribute to the conversation over a decent period of time. I think that's a solid habit for your users to develop, a habit of positivity.

Spam and unrelated comments should be downvoated. more often the case is that opposing viewpoints get doggy-piled to the bottom of the page, which is what Voat is trying to avoid.

Downvoted comments go to the bottom when using default sorting, and in larger threads they are not visible unless you click read more. Also, comments downvoted below client visibility threshold will not be visible at all.

I think a good way to address this is to not display vote totals on the user's profile page.

I don't know, I've only made one or two comments, both of which ended up getting ignored. I like the upvote limit per day, but as a lurker I sort of resent being told that only those who participate enough in the comments get the privilege of saying something is not contributing to the discussion. I'd rather the daily limit apply to both up and downvotes and stick it at that.

I've been here for four months.... I'm at 53. I say things but people either don't like it or ignore it... Oh well... One day...
