Wow, why fire the AMA champion?

I swear that the whole point of AMA was to control the conversation to avoid a Woody Harrelson situation. Victoria was exactly that. I don't understand

Reports are that she tried to negotiate her salary, and Pao fired her on the spot.

Oh right, the thing Pao did to promote a equal playing field for females?

Actually one of the reasons I moved over here.

what happened with Woody Harrelson AMA?

[–] johnparish 0 points 37 points (+37|-0) ago  (edited ago)

Woody didn't understand the point of an AMA. He was probably roped into by a intern who thought that it was a good idea. He thought he was there to talk to people about his film Rampart. (I can't link to it because IAMA is private)

This lead to people asking questions not about Rampart and Woody hilariously trying to avoid the question and shifting the conversation to about Rampart.

Stuff like this

Woody went in with no knowledge of how Reddit AMA's usually played out, and was expecting a conversation focused on his upcoming movie instead of the usual random shit. He tried several times to steer the questions back to the movie, but that only served to infuriate the readers.

Personally, I don't blame him, I blame his publicist for not telling him what to expect.

Here's the thread, archived since the subreddit itself is down. All of his answers are downvoted past the point of visibility though, and the "load more answers" functionality is broken. This is a good snapshot of how it went; there were many more answers like it.

I think it had to do with the Jesse Jackson AMA yesterday.

Having female admins that reddit actually respects kills the whole Misogyny victim card bullshit.

As a former mod of /r/conspiracy even those tinfoil hat wearing mother fuckers respected her more than pretty much any other admin.

Yeah, even if we did, I would rather have another real admin instead.

Victoria is more of a luxury we cannot afford.

She is a corporate PR person. They are easier to get than you would think and you don't necessarily want corporate sponsored AMAs floating around.

Precisely my sentiment.

Why would voat want her? Do you want the AMA sub to be nothing more than tightly controlled PR?

[–] Oh_Hi_Mark 0 points 19 points (+19|-0) ago

The admins didn't realize how much we rely on Victoria. Part of it is proof, of course: we know it's legitimate when she's sitting right there next to the person and can make them provide proof. We've had situations where agents or others have tried to do an AMA as their client, and Victoria shut that shit down immediately. We can't do that anymore.

Oh gee I missed that on first read through. They basically just admitted to sponsored AMAs being run by agents/PR people as opposed to the actual people themselves.

Just guessing, but I suspect she refused to handle some strictly marketing driven AMA. Or, maybe she wanted a living wage?

[–] facepaint 0 points 21 points (+21|-0) ago

Did she try to do something like negotiate her wage at Reddit? I hear that is frowned upon as it doesn't help women.

Are you saying she tried to negotiate her salary? That's a big no-no at Reddit these days :)

She probably forgot to check her privilege.

The Jesse Jackson AMA is what most likely tripped it. A sponsored AMA bursting into flames and crashing to the ground is generally grounds for termination.

It's because people are coming here and I joined (serious/actively) because of all this bullshit over there.
