According to Karmanaut, a mod there;

Today, we learned that Victoria was unexpectedly let go from her position with Reddt. We all had the rug ripped out from under us and feel betrayed. Before doing that, the admins really should have at least talked to us (and all the other subs that host AMAs, like /r/Books[1] , /r/Science[2] , /r/Music[3] , etc.) We had a number of AMAs scheduled for today that Victoria was supposed to help with, and they are all left absolutely high and dry (hence taking IAMA private to figure out the situation) She was still willing to help them today (before the sub was shut down, of course) even without being paid or required to do so. Just a sign of how much she is committed to what she does. The admins didn't realize how much we rely on Victoria. Part of it is proof, of course: we know it's legitimate when she's sitting right there next to the person and can make them provide proof. We've had situations where agents or others have tried to do an AMA as their client, and Victoria shut that shit down immediately. We can't do that anymore. Part of it is also that Victoria is an essential lifeline of communication. When something goes wrong in an AMA, we can call and get it fixed immediately. Otherwise, we have to resort to desperately try messaging the person via Reddit (and they may not know to check their messages or even to look for these notifications). Sometimes we have to resort to shit like this[4] (now with a screenshot[5] because I can't link to that anymore for you) where we have to nuke an entire submission just so that the person is aware of the problem. Part of it is also organization. The vast majority of scheduling requests go through her and she ensures that we have all of the standard information that we need ahead of time (date, time, proof, description, etc.) and makes it easier for the teams that set up AMAs on both ends. She ensures that things will go well and that the person understands what /r/IAMA[6] is and what is expected of them. Without her filling this role, we will be utterly overwhelmed. We might need to scrap the calendar altogether, or somehow limit AMAs from those that would need help with the process. We have been really blindsided by all of this. As a result, we will need to go through our processes and see what can be done without her. Tl;dr: for /r/IAMA[7] to work the way it currently does, we need Victoria. Without her, we need to figure out a different way for it to work.

So, yeah. Chairman Pao carries two guns. One is the gun of evil, the other gun of stupidity. It looks like this Reddit wound was from that second gun.

Ouch. I bet she tried to negotiate her salary like a man would, and Pao shut that down, firing her to protect women's rights.

I wonder if it has anything to do with how horrible Jesse Jackson's AMA was on Wed.

You can still do that. This is only in relation to celebrities who want/need assistance.

[–] Craftkorb 0 points 2 points (+2|-0) ago

There's nothing stopping you from doing that. Victorias' job was it to function as kind of glue between the one doing the AMA, usually some kind of celebrity in a certain field, and the reddit community. Those celebrities often did not understand how reddit works, and let's be frank, they don't have to if all they want to do is to do what's basically a Q&A session on the internet.

Maybe victoria should come to VOAT?

It would be nice, but she was getting paid for her job. She's also built up enough contacts in the industry, that she can land a comfy PR position somewhere. If she went to Voat, it would be unpaid and, I'm just guessing here with no evidence, might be against her employment contract with Reddit. Most tech firms have non compete clauses in their contracts...and we know that Reddit is run by a person who is not only vindictive, but willing to sue.

That said, the mods of of IAMA would be welcome here with open arms.

Perhaps you should consider asking directly @happysquid

edit: Interesting that username is taken here. That was supposed to be a twitter handle mention but it redirects to a user here that has not been active.

I kinda think this sounds an awful lot like the first step towards taking iama away from the users and having it directly controlled by reddit. It is after all, one of the largest draws to the site. How could Chairman Pao pass that up?

May have played a role. If the mods of IAMA stay "on strike" as they are, it's only a matter of time before they're replaced with admins, and their big cash cow opens the door for business again. We'll see how it plays out over the weekend.

What? It sounds like the opposite of that. Reddit already had an employee running almost all the big ama's, if they wanted more control why get rid of her? Unless they tried to mandate more control, she disagreed, and they fired her for not wanting to toe the company line.

I can confirm that the guests were not given a heads-up about this either. Talked to Paul Elio last night and everything seemed golden for the AMA today. This seems to have come out of nowhere.

What a shitshow. Way to bludgeon their possibly greatest source of new exposure (and thus new revenue).

That is pathetic from the Reddit admins. Victoria has always been lots of help to AMAs, and letting her go is infinitely stupid...until the admins didn't even bother to inform the guests. What a dick move.

Edward Frenkel sounds kinda mad:

Wow! My @reddit_AMA has been suddenly disabled in mid-sentence, just as I was explaining the impossibility of full AI

The entire @reddit_AMA has been disabled in the middle of my AMA. I feel like Kevin Kline's character in "Fish Called Wanda": Disappointed!

How about an explanation -- and an apology! -- for abruptly shutting down my AMA, @reddit_AMA ? Not cool, not cool at all.

Details on the shutting down of @reddit_AMA in the middle of my AMA: https://www.reddit.com/r/OutOfTheLoop/comments/3bw39q/why_has_riama_been_set_to_private/csq204d All this sounds really bad and unprofessional.

If this Victoria person was as genuinely caring about her job as many seem to think, then it's pretty clear they wanted someone more... ethically flexible and business-receptive for the position.

Probably a rollout of some new analytics bullshit that Reddit can leverage to try and squeeze ad revenue out of people. Maybe selling customer data to the companies who sponsor the AMAs?

0

[–] polymorphist 0 points 2 points (+2|-0) ago

Why would they need to take down a sub to push out web analytics?

0
8

[–] SuperConductiveRabbi 0 points 8 points (+8|-0) ago

Why would they need to take down a sub to upgrade their AMA approval process? It's just easier to do some kinds of maintenance (especially upgrades) by taking something offline.

[–] biznatch11 0 points 5 points (+5|-0) ago

The admins didn't take down the sub, the mods did that by their own choice.

temporarily been made private by the moderators

I wonder if that's really true, or if the admins did it without giving the mods any warning? I wouldn't be at all surprised if that was the case.

Apparently this happened right after a poorly-received Jesse Jackson AMA (which I didn't see), so people are speculating that it has something to do with that, but who knows.
