I knew some real life hippies.

They would make their own clothes, lived in their van.

The most capitalistic mother fuckers ever. They just didnt have ambition.

Story: Worked at a grocery store. Local chain, so had lots of autonomy.
Beer distributor comes in. He bought a shit load of some Minneapolis beer called "Pig's Eye".
Shit didn't sell back in the days of "Bud Light" dominance. Comes to us, hey, I need some help unloading this stuff. Big places won't buy any of it. help a brother out? We buy 5 pallets of this fine craft beer. Comes to $1 a six pack after all the rebates and discounts.
Shit is fantastic. We mark it to $3/ six pack back when Miller Lite was selling for $3.99 or $4.49 a sixer. These hippies come in. We know them, they are cool AF. Ask about this beer. We tell them the story. They ask for a discount if they buy a bunch. Sure. State law says the minimum we can sell it for is a 33% margin. We offer them 20 cases for $2 / sixer. We still make a 50% margin, and they make some money.
They buy 2 20lb bags of ice for $4, and spend $84. Leave happy as shit. They drive to a Dead show about 120 miles away chilling the beer on the way. Arrive at the show, sell cold beer for $1.50 EACH.
Pocket $7/sixer in pure hippie profit.
20 cases = 80 sixers = $560 profit in about 2 hours.

Used it to buy themselves gas money, tickets to show, and off to the next show.
Adding in selling dancing bears and stolen faces stickers for $2 that they bought for $1 at the local headshop, and they cleared about $1000 that show.

These people know how to make money.

The most capitalistic mother fuckers ever. They just didnt have ambition.

It's because hippies never desired great wealth or status. They only desired freedom. They opposed the Man -- meaning the establishment, the ruling class. They did not respect the ruling class's right to tell them that they could not consume a substance, that they could not live in their van. They rejected the dominance of the government.

But, because they not only desired freedom but understood it, they did not seek to be parasites. You would not catch a hippie on welfare. They made their own clothes, found their own homes, made their own music, their own entertainment. They were capitalistic, purely. It is not that they lacked ambition, it is that they held the root of capitalism dearly -- the individual, not the corporate enterprise.

Mind blown.

Hippies = the purist capitalists available.

I must say, I envied the fuck out of their freedom.

Just met a guy at the Delta Skyclub bar who is technically "homeless". He is a performer who gets his shit for free when on a job - books weeklong gigs. Doesn't own stuff. Uses his earnings to pay for off days between gigs. Uses non-rev stuff to travel. Got in on a "buddy pass" and downed 7 drinks for free, entertaining the fuck out of us.

Thinking back on it, hippies are basically the subsistence, yeoman farmer of Jeffersonian lore.

Wow. Beautifully said. Both of you, /u/cyclops1771 fantastic posts.

Am I really a dirty hippy at heart? Not only does that sound incredibly freeing, incredibly ... humble, almost, yet intelligent. Here I am working some sucker job for some other sucker that cuts me a check twice a month. I could be living the free life.

I'll be over here daydreaming if anyone needs me.

[–] bagano1 1 points 5 points (+6|-1) ago

Sigh.

Mind you, these were a few hippies out of how many, who frequented music festivals? Also, many of them are trustafarians with rich daddies. This sort of thing is 2+2 to them. They probably didn't even need it.

Also, how many of these shows are going on a year? I doubt they can make a living off of what they're doing.

I don't think 'making a living off it' was the end-goal. It was to get some scratch to be well enough off to live for a while. Next thing'll come up.

If you follow the rainbow coalition or whatever weird festival is moving across country, yeah, you can make a fucking fortune. My buddy followed that circuit for three years in, uh, 'sales and acquisitions'. Cleared more than 100k a year. Unfortunately he was really into the cocaine, and would have literally nothing to show by the end.

[–] cyclops1771 0 points 2 points (+2|-0) ago

Yeah, I've run into my share of trustafarians.

Back in teh 80's and 90's, there really was a non-rich kid "go out and explore" mentality.

these people were in it to be happy by not being commercial. And for the music.

Usually, the trustafarians are out for the "experience", while the "hippies" were out for the music. These were the days of $14 General admission tickets.

I kind of hung out in that crowd, so for the most part, all the hippies I knew were like those I described. Where I live now, there is another group like this, who do Renaissance festivals, year round. They spend the winter around here, making their crafts, and then start traveling around the country.

No offense, but you are naive to this lifestyle. I have a friend who is a HUGE Phish Head. The epitome of hippies today. Most rich kids go to coachella or Steve Aoki shows, not hippy shows. I have met dozens and dozens of people described above. They sell waters, burgers, beer, mushrooms, acid etc for a small markup in the parking lot, buy the next shows tickets, and drive around the country following these bands. It's very real, and they go to dozens of shows a year. One friend of my friend sold sunglasses she made with Phish insider jokes printed on them (like a Camel or a maze) while walking around. She was cute, so the sale was easy. She followed them for over a year on tour. This is what those people do.

There is so much truth in this. Most of the hippies I knew were always selling something outside a show to fund the lifestyle. Mostly sandwiches, crafts or drugs

Ten pairs of socks wouldn't get you a meal in Manali nowadays. I lived in the Old version two years ago and although it's relatively cheap in comparison to where I live now it certainly wasn't the same as you describe.

"Gentrification of high-traffic parts of the internet."

This phrase perfectly describes my feelings of how the internet has changed in the last 20 years.

I miss the "wild, wild west" days of the 90s.

Even early video games online were great. People were enthusiastic and happy to be a part of something online. It can still be like that though but people always want someone else to be the first instead of taking initiative which is a scary trend currently. They don't want to be held accountable if something shitty happens because they speak out, and they'll turn on whoever does eventually speak out. These are sad times for the internet.

While he does make a fair point the truth is rather more sinister. We've already seen that corporations are perfectly willing to take a huge hit to their profit margins if it means pushing propaganda.

The only thing more terrifying than greedy corporate sociopaths is batshit insane ideological zealots that want you and your kind dead. At least the greedy corporate fuck is predictable. It's like why people in South Korea were so shocked their president had been brainwashed by a cult leader. At least with the run of the mill corrupt politician you know what they'll do and how they'll behave, but when the president is a cult zombie being ordered around like a puppet by an equally insane and rapacious cult leader, then you start being scared shitless.

It's also why so many people subscribe to conspiracy theories. It's far more comforting to live in a world that works according to someone's dark machinations than to think about one that is complete anarchy and where no one knows what the fuck they're doing.

While I'm sure it decreases their income, I doubt it decreases profit margins. I'm sure they get tons of political favors and kickbacks for it.

His description of the music festival is exactly the evolution Jazz Fest in New Orleans went through. Child tickets cost 10 dollars. Maroon 5 performed this year. Kids were everywhere.

To be fair jazz fest has been family friendly for a long time, and they only headlined 1 day out of 7. there were 3 other bands also playing at the same time on different stages.

I like the family friendly thing. I don't feel like a creep going to a kids music fest and can just have a few beers with friends and family.

Who actually goes to these things and why? I always thought they were just excuses for city budget to disperse money to select individuals for things that were difficult to account for, much like a smaller version of the Olympics. Did anyone at any time ever actually like Jazz? Who knows or cares about the various concerts, crafts fairs and festivals that towns and cities put on besides the city managers who use them drain the budget and reward select friends?

Nah. He's actually wrong. The reason why reddit caters to SJW's is because in Western society these days, most people are indoctrinated by it in school and in the media. That's why you see so many assholes out there who literally think their POV on life is right, because they grew up with textbooks, teachers, the media and entertainment figures telling them "This is the right way to think." Remember Katy Perry in that interview talking about how "we all need to unite and come together." That's the shit that dumb people eat up and believe it's true. Never mind that most of the people who believe this probably don't know the first thing about Middle Eastern history or any kind of current affairs. They just believe it because some asshole with an agenda repeated it on TV.

I just sit back and destroy people's arguments because I know where they picked it up from. They can deny it all day, and they will, but just keep pegging them. One huge idiot is Rachel Maddow. Another is Jon Stewart, Colbert and John Oliver. These people fill the heads of stupid millennials with awful, unrealistic garbage and make millions doing so, thus becoming hypocrites themselves. Most of these liberals failed math and accounting. Everything they propose is fiscally delusional and unsustainable. Yet they continue to believe it can work.

Also, reddit caters to SJW's because most of these companies are run by cunts who see SJW policies as being good for business, like immigration, for example. Reddit will get their ad money as a result of that. Never mind that eventually, as always, immigration becomes a huge problem. By the time the SJW's figure out what a mistake it was, it will be too late. You're dealing with really, really stupid people here.

Average IQ in the west is 100. 25% of people have an IQ of 85. That's functional, but only just. Thing about how many idiots that is. That's some scary shit.

Makes me wonder what the IQ of the average person is here.

That being said, I also disagree with the redditor here. I don't think it is profitable in the long term. Hard core SJW nonsense has only been around for a few years. Sure, PC culture has been around since the '90's, but it didn't really start ramping up until Obama and hit fever pitch within the last two years.

Look at Marvel. They tried the SJW shit and it's killing them. Same with Bioware. They're essentially in a downward spiral. Cable TV is losing subscribers like crazy and more people are aware of fake news (MSM) more than ever. The New York Times and Washington Post haven't been profitable for a while.

The way I see it, any company that subscribes to the SJW ethic is in a slow death spiral. But that's postmodern thought for you. A philosophy so absurd it cannot hold up under its own stupidity.

Just wait until these companies realize how much money they're losing by capitulating to the SJW's. They'll drop that shit like a full pair of depends.

[–] WeKangzNow 0 points 10 points (+10|-0) ago  (edited ago)

Probably higher than average, but it's sort of a stupid thing to brag about. I do think it's important for people to generally know what their IQ is so they have a semi-realistic expectation. People with 120 IQs (I'm guessing is pretty common here) is in this weird zone where they are indeed fairly smart, but they could never be things like chess champion, physicist, mathematician, composer, artist(that actually isnt dogshit), etc. Your still a normie, just a smarter one.

In an ideal world, these people would be your guardian class types. Today you'll be targeted for removal. They want dumb cogs. There are certain work environments that I'm convinced are made to make above-average IQ people go insane. PowerPoint, useless meetings, chasing tails, solving symptoms - not causes, people talking in circles, etc.

Many aren't really doing it by choice to make money. They're doing it because they believe in it and really do think it makes them superior to other people. These idiots will eventually have to be replaced because they're not going to give up their shit. If anything, it's setting civil rights back because a LOT of people are really getting tired of black people and Muslims. The truth is, they're really shitty people. They're hypocrites. You have people like me that work in their world and realize they're full of shit and undeserving of sympathy. Then you have Dirk, the prep school douche that thinks anyone who makes less than a million a year is an ignorant racist. Not sure how long you can take idiots like that seriously...

I don't believe that people can hold spoonfed beliefs for long. Eventually, if an ideology is complete bullshit, people will lose their religion. Unfortunately, society may force them to keep up the appearances of belief and continue to spread the propaganda. I think OP's screenshot has a lot of validity to it. Acts go mainstream. By gaining popularity and attention, the quirks that made it new and interesting cannot be sustained. It's easy to be free when no one's watching. Every gesture made by the king is scrunitized by millions. It sucks the life out of things.

0
2

[–] bagano1 0 points 2 points (+2|-0) ago

It's easy for them to think this way because it's not their money. They think the money to take care of these people grows on a farm somewhere and is in abundance. It's just not like that. The rulers of other middle eastern countries know immigration is bad. Most nations do. Westerners, especially in America, don't think so because they feel that hey, they're living well, let more people into the party. What, so we can be as destitute as they were in their home nation? FUCK NO. ENOUGH.

Nope, no stereotype here. While I love shoes, purses and clothes, I have never cared about labels, so I never overpay for that shit. Not big on jewelry, it's mostly costume stuff, in fact I told my husband I only wanted a wedding band, but he insisted I have a diamond because he didn't want everyone to think he was cheap. Nails are natural, keep my hair long, so I only need it trimmed every 3 months or so.

Oh and I don't carry any credit cards, just my debit card. Everyone do your best to never fall into the credit card trap!
