We should have a bot that does this. Detects reddit link? Posts archive.

I like how the first comment is someone saying they sometimes accidentally vote on linked threads and they are worried they might get banned for admitting that. As if SRS would ban them for doing it on purpose constantly, you know like brigading or something...

Saying "they won't be banned" implies that SRS is still separate from Reddit leadership.

I would argue, as I have before, that SRS is the de facto enforcer of Reddit's true policies - ones that won't sound great if they're heard out of official mouths.

Can someone tell me what the significance of the NP links are?

No Participation Mode is typically used when a thread is linked elsewhere on Reddit, and is active when being redirected through that link.

This is to prevent "downvote brigading" when a link from a small subreddit is linked to a larger subreddit.

Voting doesn't appear to actually be disabled, but it simply frowned upon. And supposedly banning can occur if you vote on a thread in No Participation Mode, whether this is enforced, I couldnt say.

As far as I can tell, to make me write a couple of lines of code to replace links. The idea of a social media site where social interaction is forbidden shows just how disconnected from reality they are.

This works much better than the mess that they linked to:

// ==UserScript==
// [@name](/user/name)        No Participation Fix
// [@description](/user/description) NP mode links replaced with normal links
// [@include](/user/include)     *.reddit.com/*
// [@version](/user/version)     1
// ==/UserScript==

document.addEventListener("DOMContentLoaded", replaceLinks, false );

if( document.readState === "complete" ) {
  replaceLinks();
}

function replaceLinks() {
  Array.forEach( document.links, function(a) {
    a.href = a.href.replace( "np.reddit.com/", "reddit.com/" );
  });
}

No participation. It doesn't really do anything, but many subreddits remove up/downvote icons if it starts with np.

People with RES can still use keyboard shortcuts to vote, and you can just remove the np to go to the normal site.

If a sub has their CSS set up, an NP link will make it so voting is either impossible, does nothing, or alerts the user that it's an NP link. It's basically just a CSS hack that the admins never thought would be useful to put in as a default site-wide feature, much like how they never understood that a dark theme would be useful or basically anything else people have wanted in the past few years.

While NP isn't a Reddit feature, it's still better than nothing. SRS is now basically saying that they don't care and will only allow non-NP Reddit links. Any sub that took the time to implement NP into their CSS has basically done so for no reason as far as SRS is concerned.

People who make fun of the 1st Amendment... they clearly don't understand irony. And that irony is going to fuck them in the ass some day.

NP links are a mostly-ineffective CSS hack that we don't officially support.

/r/bestof didnt use NP links when they were a default.
