I'm about as anti-racist as it get. Tag me for it if you want. But I think that that subreddit shouldn't be banned. Here's why.

If you leave people's ideas without a home, those ideas will fester. Racist subreddits give people, people with real beliefs, a place to discuss their thoughts, and, more importantly, a place where they can be seen in the open by people who think differently. Racism is wrong and untenable for numerous reasons. If people who are racist don't have a place where they can feel free to be themselves, though, as well as a place where they can have their ideas be seen and confronted, they will end up in a racist echo-chamber where they will in fact become more racist.

Bad ideas cannot be combatted by banning them. They can only be combatted by strongers ideas. Reddit was a place where racists and anti-racists could hash it out. Now we're going to have two different echo-chambers. Does Reddit really think that will make the racists go away?

I don't think you'll get much flak, if any for your opinion. Most of us came over here when the admins began banning subreddits because we support free speech, even if you're using it to be an asshole.

That's fine even if I do. I didn't come here to not catch flak. I came here to have authentic, no holds barred discussions. Is is weird that I think talking to people on a computer can't actually hurt me? In fact, I think it makes me better. I'm secure enough in my beliefs that I'd rather they go through a flame war every once and a while. It lets me know they're still solid.

Too many people thing that banning something will make it go away forever. Too bad that has never worked in the history of ever.

I see what you are saying, but I think a racist sub should be banned. The thing about race is that one cannot choose to be the race they were bred to be, weight on the other hand, is a choice (for the most part). The shaming of fat people is an effort to get people off their asses and realize they can change--just like what happened in the 90s with smoking. If anything racism is a bad trait that should be shamed away like obesity--it serves no good and changes how people think of you.

Then tell people that. We're anonymous people. On the internet. Go the fuck in there and tell people why you think race should not be something that they should judge people on. But if you ban them, all they are going to do is be a group of racists who never hear a different opinion, debating their ideas in bar-rooms and hidden places, rolling in and passing on their hate while never hearing anyone tell them any reason why they should think differently.

Am I a racist? No. Do I support free speech? Yes. Do I like that r/coontown will be shutdown? yes and no. No because I support free speech but yes because it's going to show reddit's true colors as more 'free-speech' subs get shut down and we can see reddit buried in the history books of the internet where it belongs.

To be honest. I don't like either coontown of FPH. I've banned FPH on this site because I don't want to see it. I don't want to censor other peoples opinions though, so in my opinion you should be free to say what you want, no matter how offensive it is.

I draw the line at harassment, so if you call someone a fat bitch or a nigger to their faces you're obviously doing something wrong, but you shouldn't necessarily be punished for it.

I also don't condone using other peoples pictures to make fun of them like FPH does. There may be a gray area if the people on the pictures published them to the net for public viewing, but as I understand it FPH takes their own picture, and I don't think they should do that. We got to have some basic rules of conduct in a society to avoid anarchy.

You're pretty close to my point of view. Not quite, however.

I don't like many of those subs. However, I think they should remain. I have enough off-the-wall opinions of my own to know that I should not be a hypocrite and demand that others' opinions be shut down, regardless of how vile I consider them to be.

However, unlike you, I do not have a line to draw. Or rather, I would have a line to draw, but I know myself too well. I know that any such line would shift over time, and as such I try to shrug off my personal qualms and not draw a line in the first place.

I think we all agree that banning the subredditt won't make the racism or fat shaming go away. It's a childish exercise that makes Pao feel powerful.

Are there any subredditts devoted to hating white people? I'm curious how they will be dealt with if at all.

I don't agree with them at all, but they have every right to say things. Words are just words. If they are banned it will only increase voat's visibility.

Am I racist? Only if hating niggers (not black people, niggers) is. Do I support frozen peaches? Yes. Just because you don't like somebody's opinion doesn't mean you should ban it.

Well, in a way, it's not all bad.

I personally don't support removing subs for any other reason than illegality, but if reddit wants to come off even remotely consistent in their weird, non-transparent banning policy it obviously has to go. Many subs that were much less disturbing and offensive have been removed in the past, so if this whole "safe space" thing is what they're running with, they can at least do it properly and be consistent about what kind of content deserves a sub ban.

Yeah but we all know that won't happen, they aren't going to lay out specifics for what kind of stuff will be deleted, they're just going to keep shadowbanning and getting rid of stuff that they don't like, doesn't matter if you don't like it or not, but if they don't like it, it's going away. Would've helped if they started this purge all at once instead of just doing five subreddits and then hiding behind their desks with fingers in their ears going "We can't hear you, everything is going as planned." If they laid out specific rules for what would be deleted, then they would have to get rid of thousands of subreddits and the only ones left would be plain as hell and super generic with the creepy vibe of "everything's fine here, come join us, we're all happy over here."

Making fun of fat people? You're the worst and you need to go. Beating women, raping women, having sex with dogs, and racism? Come on in, those subreddits survived the initial purge because they weren't as offensive as those other filthy subreddits.

Also the PR about this whole stunt has been so poorly handled, they just posted what they were going to do and then closed off all ways of communicating to their user base other than banning and deleting stuff without saying anything. You know, like if they hide long enough it will all just go away like a bad dream.
