It's the dark ages. But the religion that keeps everybody stupid is Equality.

Western civilization arose out of the so-called dark ages (they were not as dark as modernity would want you to believe).
It's dark as opposed to light, as in the enlightenment. I'm not sure it's called that because of living conditions.
