Why 3 and not some other number?

There are two sets of numbers. 23+1=24, 1*2=2, now 24+2=26, 26+2=28 and so on

21-2=19, 2*2=4, now 19-4=15, 5-4=11 and so on til 3 is the next number.

Edit, wait. I'll leave this but 36 doesn't work now that I look. I may have to revise my answer

The pattern was Nn = Nn-1 + Mn, where N is initially 22 and M is the sign alternating prime numbers. For example M = {+1, -2, +3, -5, +7, -11, +13, -17, +19, -23, +29, -31... }.

Now to get the 12th number, Nn-1 = 36, Mn = -31, Nn = 36 + -31 = 5.
