This is a moderated community.
The goal is to encourage people to approach mathematics in a fashion that makes it accessible. In order to do this, we're going to need a few basic rules.
- Try to be on topic.
- Be civil.
- No drama.
Pretty simple, huh? Yeah... I reduced them to the lowest common denominator. If you have any questions, feel free to ask.
Off-topic is tolerated to some extent. Submissions should all be about mathematics, or clearly relate to mathematics. However, once you get into the comments section, it's a much looser standard. Discourse is encouraged, so long as civility is maintained. Good conversations tend to meander around topics and that's perfectly acceptable.
If you do vote, concentrate on promoting content and not downvoting content. Encourage and comment, if you see something that could use improvement. Downvotes don't convey very much information and aren't really helpful. If you must, you must... But try to assume the person making the post was just communicating poorly. Try to assume the best possible interpretation of their post.

Yup. I don't even feel bad about it. Plagiarism is unacceptable, especially in my discipline. I love mathematics too much to let that go unanswered. It's actually the first plagiarism I'd personally uncovered.

That's pretty cool. I would never read a paper like that in the first place. It's mostly over my head, I'm sure. I'm not a mathematician. You have a good memory to remember seeing that before. I've had times where I had seen articles in the local newspaper that were printed word for word a month earlier, but I didn't make any kind of issue, it wasnt academic

Yeah, I've a lot of training with mathematics so it sticks n my memory for a while. See, I read mathematics like you might read English. If I'm well practiced, I can even read it at a reasonable speed. I'm a bit out of practice, but still not too bad. It's a bit like learning a foreign language, and it is a language.
Still, it almost certainly is going to result in someone's academic career being finished. They will almost certainly be expelled and won't be admitted into any other reputable university. They are, pretty much, now done with their career in academics. They might be able to use those skills to get a data science or programming job, but they'll never work in academia. They'll never get their doctorate. They'll not even get their degree that they are working on. I've completely changed their life, as of today.
And I don't feel even a little bad about it. As a scientist and mathematician, I'm very interested in maintaining the reputation of academia. There is no acceptable excuse for this. There are no second chances, at least not at reputable universities. They're done with their time in academia. That's a good thing.
