i made a couple edits to clarify...

you are stretching the material to that whatever you are bolting to. that is why there is torque specs on some assembly. also, there is some situations they call on you to replace the bolt if removed because it has stretched to much. This is very small amounts though.

that is why you sometimes hear that creaking sound you are releasing that tension on the threads.

Cylinder head bolts are often stretch bolts and are a one time use bolt.

Steels have a tension force, stretch and return to it's original length. But to call it a spring, i think that's a bit of a ... stretch.
