These engines were amongst the most efficient reciprocating engines ever produced. They were mostly used for generation of electricity during their heyday which was actually after the invention of the diesel engine.

The central spool valve eliminates all the thermal losses associated with external valving. The inline design is another refinement which eliminates the need for a crosshead.

High speed engines were also the first engines to employ closed circuit lubrication in an enclosed crank case. All the engines until that period used total loss lubrication.
