I've only ever been able to pick a lock by 'accident' (I still don't have a feel for which pins are sticking, etc) despite having played around with picks on and off for a few years. I've managed to open a few padlocks after hours of trying, and once I managed to get into my in-law's house when we were locked out (less than 2 minutes before they got home).
TLDR: I suck at lock picking.
Despite my lack of skill, I got bored at work and make a quick rake and tension wrench out of a couple of paper clips and tried them out on the locking drawers under my desk. Less than 5 seconds later, it was open. By far the easiest thing I've ever picked. I tried it again with the same lock and then again with one on a different desk. Same result, although it took me almost 30 seconds.
