For the x86 Intel anything at all will work. For PPC I'd use something Debian based (Xubuntu, Mint, etc) but you have a wide variety of options there as well.

I tend to install debian on everything...

Cinnamon might not be the best Desktop Environment for an older machine. It fairly resource heavy compared to other options out there.

Probably not all but you got best chance to go with debian. Debian supports largest portion of platforms.
