geeqie will certainly do a recursive slideshow. Right click on a folder on the left and choose Slideshow Recursive. For including the current directory you probably need to go up to the parent directory and choose your folder from there (or a child folder and choose the .. folder entry)
Also, since you said random, you'll also need to go into the preferences and set the random slideshow option (it isn't a setting per-slideshow).

Excellent! Thank you. I had tried a few image viewers but just hadn't found one that did everything I wanted. This looks great.
