Although I have not tried to optimise it, I am sure the more experienced Linux goats could reduce that.

Mint is based on Ubuntu which is based on Debian, and the only bonus to using Ubuntu is that it allows easier installs of non-free software, which isn't that hard anyway.

Go to the source. You get a better, more stable distro that isn't sending all your searches to Amazon (in Ubuntu's case).
