Im in the market myself... after a lot of research this is what i have narrowed it down too... BUT.. with that said, once i actually come up with the money for one, the first thing ill do when i get it is nuke the drive and install mint... this is linux, if you have to modify an OS to not be spied on (Ubuntu) you are doing something wrong.....
I got a dual boot tablet (Win10/Android) from China a while back with the intention of putting Linux on it, but when I started to research it I was disappointed at how few resources I could find. I mean there are quite a few hints and suggestions out there and I did manage to root it but haven't gone any further because the chance of bricking the thing seems too great. Or even if I was successful then it's likely that not all of the hardware would be supported, like the camera or wifi or even the touch screen. I remain hopeful but for now it's a $400 paper weight.

This was the device I nearly bought. I wanted more 1st hand information before I committed.

Apparently the Surface Pro 1 runs linux pretty well now. Here's a review of it running Ubuntu (at 48:38)

You should explore installing Linux on x86 tablets - there are people who have done it successfully.

That is essentially what I am looking for. Someone to guide me in the right direction. Which hardware and distribution combo will set me free?

Thanks for taking the time to answer my questions. Your input has been appreciated.
I still haven't settled on a device to buy. I may wait until something a bit more polished or hacker friendly is released.

The HP Thinkpad can run a version of Linux Touch. The guy who sold me my linux-driven Chromebook has one.

Loads of chinese companies make them now, although they mmight come pre-shipped with windows.
I think unity and KDE have tablet compatible desktops now, not sure though.

The tablet market is so murky. I just want to read my pdfs' and Epubs' in private.
