Yes, but we also need to keep always in mind that news services have the tendency to only (or mostly) report bad news over good news. Also, it gets the worst from all over the world, even things that are totally irrelevant to your life.

This makes you believe that life is a horrible and risky place, and, in turn, this makes you do bad choices... such as let the government spy on you "for your security" when, if you put the terrorist attacks in the correct prospective, their victims are very few, probably very far from your home, and you are much more likely to die because you fell from the stairs than from the bomb of a terrorist attack.

Global news services are a very good way to control people for the government. All they have to do is wait till the next terrorist attack to have enough people scared to let them do pretty much whatever they like (such as ban encryption).

A better news service should give you local news, relevant to your life, and also give a good share to good news. They don't do this because bad news give them more public and so more money from the ads, but by doing so they are messing up with the reality and with your mind... and all this without telling you a single lie. There are many ways to deceive someone, and one of the most insidious is to use only the truth by focusing only on the part of the truth that is useful to your cause and ignoring the part that doesn't do to your cause any good.

So the suggestion of OP actually makes sense. I also believe that news services are doing a very bad service to us, they are manipulating and deceiving us. Limit your news time, think more about what actually happens in your neighborhood or in your city and forget things that don't matter in your life if you don't want to be scared all the time following ghosts. It will make your life better, it will show you that there is a lot of good too and that reality is not such a dark place as the news services make it seem by concentrating only bad news that happen thousand of miles away from you in places and cities that you never even knew existed.

TIL: The news subvoat is literally the only place on the Internet or in the world to get news about what is happening.

Feeling good because you closed your eyes doesn't change what's coming, just now you will be less informed and prepared.

So post some news from other sources. I don't mind Breibart myself, but I would still like more sources.

Just upvoat news that isn't about immigration and ignore the rest. If other media didn't censor that issue, we wouldn't see it so much. We have to accept the overreporting of censored topics because we oppose censorship.

I just counted 16 Breitbart links out of the top 100 in v/news. That's not quite 90%.

Also, 2 Breitbart links out of the top 100 in v/all.

Yep. Kind of sad though. /v/news should be at least a somewhat objective place for news and current events to stay informed, but it's just another ideological shithole filled with people trying to push agendas. You can unsub and rest easy knowing that nothing of value was lost.

It's proven by studies: Following news (on voat or otherwise) impact your quality of life.
Mostly it's because News is a persistent and uninterrupted feed of scary stuffs, told in a way to grab your attention.. until the next stuff.

Not knowing who was killed where, or who won the last championship of meditation, or what a celebrity put in her pants..it's fine. Nothing of that will impact your everyday life... But they want you to believe every thing, every day is of utmost importance. It is not.

Ignorance is bliss. I'd rather see a few bigots and assholes with my news than no news at all.

I know it's difficult and those subs can be, at best, annoying. However, that hopeless feeling you get from them will go away (with desensitization), and you'll be a more informed person if you stick with them (even passively)

Most of the posts in the news subs don't aim to inform though, they aim to terrify and cause hysteria.

That's kind of what happens when terrifying and hysterical things are happening, you can make the napalm burn rainbows all you want but at the end of the day its still fucking fire,

so, is there anything we can do without cutting the news completely?
