It is more that the US is a two party system, mostly because of low information voters. If the Libertarians started picking up too many voters the Republicans would fold in the main points people were siding with them on and take those voters back. There are not a lot of voters who can't be made into single issue voters (or at bare minimum broken down to 2-3 issues at most). Once you satisfy those issues people are willing to overlook a lot more while voting for a candidate who they think has a chance to win. Which means D/R every election. Might be time to look at taking ballot access away from the states and having one set of rules for the entire country in elections for President (the only elected office that represents the entire nation).
