It is more that the US is a two party system, mostly because of low information voters. If the Libertarians started picking up too many voters the Republicans would fold in the main points people were siding with them on and take those voters back. There are not a lot of voters who can't be made into single issue voters (or at bare minimum broken down to 2-3 issues at most). Once you satisfy those issues people are willing to overlook a lot more while voting for a candidate who they think has a chance to win. Which means D/R every election. Might be time to look at taking ballot access away from the states and having one set of rules for the entire country in elections for President (the only elected office that represents the entire nation).

Obvious Divide & Conquer
Libertarians know we side with them when the stakes aren't this high. I wish they were more prominent but it's near impossible for a new party to gain ground in today's political climate.

Actually, I think seeing this as divide and conquer is giving the writer too much credit. Over time changes in who are the writers and editors for Reason have resulted in it becoming more of a lefty libertarian publication and less of a right libertarian one. This guy categorizes Sanford as libertarian which is a joke. That guy is a progressive Republican RINO. The writer also displays a bit of Trump derangement syndrome.

I don't get it...somebody summaries this.

I think the article makes the point that nobody really cares about Libertarians. We're willing to cooperate with them where they prove useful, and to use them when they prove unhelpful, but at the end of the day they are loud-mouthed far out of proportion to their actual social-political power. Few people get excited about the idea of draining our government to the point that it can't actually do anything. Moderates want safer streets and better schools. Leftists want more welfare. Nationalists want a stronger military.
...that sums up like 85% of the country. Those three voting blocks are often able to reach an agreement without Libertarians, who prattle on about big government.

Seems like more of an attempt to divide. I lean libertarian, and even I can see the need to dominate the world in order to keep the muslims at bay. The democrats have made it clear that they want Muslims to invade the planet and I'll side with Republican Nationalists ......NeoCons may as well be democrats and I think they are. The world is a fucked up place.....I'd even like to send the military to the UK, Sweden and France to bring some liberation freedom bombs to their muslim loving "leadership." Lots of shit needs blown up before we can go back to being less active overseas.

Hoppean Libertarians are the future my goats. Civic Nationalism still has a place in the heart of the American libertarian, they just give no quarter to the crony beauraucratic bullshit that modern government has worked itself into. Most Libertarians are borderline minarchists and borderline bootlicker when they finally cut through the edgelording cognitive dissonance.
