Python is a great language to start out learning, but eventually, you will need more than one tool. No one programming language will define a career. Knowing python can be a secret weapon in ANY career though.

Even in fields where you primarily use one language, Python can be wonderful as a pocket language.

I do most of my major coding in Fortran since I am working on high performance computing, but the visualization tools Python offers is invaluable for data analysis and making figures that I can show in presentations.

Programming is an evolving career; in order to stay ahead, you need to be constantly constantly learning the new software and languages that come out over time.

From what I've seen Python is emerging as a strong alternative to R in data analytics (when combined with Numpy, pandas and related tools).
