Already anno 2000, hardly any scientific paper or even thesis is published without at least an English abstract. The fact that English is writable in basic ASCII and therefore very computer friendly is one of the factors that played a role in this preference.
Even nowadays, having a name with a simple c cedille ( ç ) or any other accentuation makes it difficult to have a proper email address, username, nickname, etc.
