I like to think of rape and robbery as the same thing.

In both instances, you have something the other person wants, but you don't know when, how, or where they are going to strike.

The police, at least in my country, bombard us with advice and adverts aiming at taking precautions with our possessions. Don't walk around at night with your phone out. Get an alarm system. Lock up your front and back doors. Don't keep your car keys in view of a window, or letter box.

We don't focus our attention on the thieves, because we know it is pointless trying to teach them to stop stealing. Instead, we focus attention on the victims, to make it harder for the thieves to rob them.

The same attitude should be adopted for rape prevention, by teaching women how to make themselves less of an easy target, and how to defend themselves, in the event that they are targeted.

Victim blaming, aka I shouldnt have to do things because doing things is hard.

people say "victim blaming" as if it means something.

we blame victims all the fucking time. "i was counting my money in the bad side of town at midnight and i got mugged!" "well what the fuck were you doing that for you fucking imbecile?!"

no amount of stupidity JUSTIFIES crimes perpetrated against them.

but we can and should still say that stupid people bring upon disaster to themselves by doing stupid things. don't want to get robbed? lock the fucking door.
