You mean like aspirin? Yes. Taking out impurities and making it safe to eat tree bark was a big step forward.

And far too many universally call technology progress while failing to acknowledge that it has left us in a dangerously warmed climate.

The guy who came up with plastic was trying to save elephants. Science is full of unintended consequences, yes, absolutely! But what is the alternative? Perhaps we should have continued to carry heavy loads on top of our heads. Because, you know, the invention of the wheel will someday be attached to the combustible engine that will cause horrible levels of air pollution.
