Okay. Here's the thing. I have good, dear friends, whom I love deeply...that follow and support Anita Sarkeesian.

I don't understand! In all other things they are rational people. But they are convinced, convinced that any attack on Sarkeesian just demonstrates her point that sexism is rampant in games.

They play games! They must know that she's either lying or (being very charitable) misinformed. They make fun of Jack Thompson and don't see the parallels.

I just don't understand.

It's called gynocentrism. Our society has been engineered into it for centuries and it is very hard to overcome.

Spot on. The "women are wonderful" effect, combined with a desire to avoid being called sexist/mysoginistic/whatever the SJW buzzword of the week is, can make people support completely irrational stuff.

"Women are wonderful" - Hurts women.

"Men are capable" - The patriarchy backfires.

I have a coworker who really likes Sarkeesian. If I were to show him this image I guarantee he'd just say that it's a single example, and that anyone can make a mistake from time to time. It would likely do absolutely nothing to sway his opinion, and he wouldn't mentally file it under "contrary evidence that I should keep in mind." I don't think there's any volume of evidence I could collect that he'd accept as sufficient to change his opinion about her. I don't understand it.

To people who aren't familiar with who she is and just see one of her videos, she is surprisingly persuasive. Especially with her newer videos that are really flashy and have an actual production value (cough cough kickstarter), the look and feel of her videos can easily make you think she knows what she's talking about even though she has no clue. Then, once you agree with her and entertain her idea that games are sexist pits of misogyny, confirmation bias makes every criticism reinforce her ideas.

It's scary actually.
