I wouldn't say easier , the halves that have the main bearings in them has to be torqued while the crankshaft is outside of the engine . Its a precision fit so even slightly damaging the case or bearing shells would make reinstall an issue also.

Was it easy to remove?
It makes for a stronger engine block I suppose but unless it has some huge advantage for the bearings I don't see the point.
