Did a bunch of weeding and trimming over the long weekend. Filled up the wheelbarrow six fucking times with weeds, mostly bindweed. Shit just wont fucking die. I'm hoping that as long as I keep them from going to seed, I can eventually get the roots to burn out and run out of energy to push themselves back to the surface. All the other weeds eventually get shaded out, but the bindweed with its, and I shit you not, ten foot roots I've pulled up before, just climbs up everything around it and strangles it. And unlike other weeds, the better the soil, the better the bindweed does.
Anyways, about that jew spinach. Bought it from Baker Creek, called Galilee spinach. Supposed to be very slow to bolt and cold and heat hardy. @middle_path grew some I sent him and it bolted almost immediately. Mine did too. What I didn't realize until I went to harvest it, was that its seed pods are giant fucking spikes. They act like goat's heads, sticking to everything, but they are massive. Leave it to jew spinach to offer almost nothing in the way of usable food, scatter massive caltrops across the bed, and likely be impossible to eradicate if I had not pulled them up before the seeds really stopped dropping off. http://i.imgs.fyi/img/3f0e.jpg

Endive and herbs are doing great. The lavender is killing it. Elderberries, gooseberries, and currants are covered in fruit.

Peppers are doing well. I got some bug damage early on, but the wasps have moved into the tansy (the big bushy fern leaved plants scattered around) and have all but eliminated them. My japanese banana (back far left) has put out about a dozen leaves and is about a foot tall now. Artichokes have little heads on them finally. May actually get some this year.

All this looks good. Remulched and cut the comfrey way back for comfrey tea. The aronias have grown about a foot this year, which is good considering they were 3 inch bare root plants last year.

Lots of strawberries and asparagus. Rhubarb, not so much. Think they need another year. Even a couple of grape bunches on the vine growing up the mulberry tree. Lots of horseradish too. Going to have to do something with the greens.

Tomatoes and basil are going fantastic and are loaded with fruit. I pretty much just leave them alone. The okra, top right, is not doing so hot. They haven't really grown much in the last few weeks.

More endive, a couple of cherry type tomatoes, blackberries, dill, and flowers.

I need to check my plant again, but the seed pods on my Galilee spinach aren't as spikey. Wonder what's up with that.
