My grandmother's family had a large house in one of the more upscale neighborhoods in Portland, when she was a girl. She talked about "the blacks" moving into the area and how slowly but surely it all went to shit. A young me -- idealistic and liberal -- secretly thought she was nothing but an old racist when she'd say nigger or blacks, but she never did it with rancor; they were just labels to her, like redhead or tall.

Once when I was visiting we went to see the old neighborhood but is was run down as was their old house. At the time I couldn't understand how she and my aunt spoke so glowingly of their youth there. It wasn't until years later that I understood that she was perhaps the most un-racist person I've known. It's no joke: Blacks ruin everything.
